Hello Boston map lovers! It’s Charlotte, one of the Gallery Attendants at the Leventhal Map Center. Happy 144th Ann(ex)iversary, Charlestown, Brighton, and West Roxbury! On this day in 1873, Charlestown, Brighton, and West Roxbury (including present-day Jamaica Plain and Roslindale) voted to be annexed by the city of Boston. In an era of growth and industrialization, a larger municipality was better able to manage water and industry. This 1874 map by Sampson, Davenport, & Co. shows Boston’s growth by annexation in the late nineteenth century. Check out the key: the faint yellow area shows Brighton, Charlestown, and West Roxbury, which voted to join on October 7, 1873. They officially became part of Boston in 1874.
(What about Brookline? On the same day, Brookline voted against annexation. However, it donated a strip of land along Commonwealth Avenue so that Boston could connect to Brighton).
