My goal is to generate as little trash as possible, and to that end, I
avoid eating in cafes that serve everything on disposable plates. I also
avoid conventional carry-out, limiting most of my carry-out dining to a
cafe that permits me to bring my own containers.

Restaurant workers with whom I've spoken have stated different beliefs
about whether DC's health code permits customers to bring their own
containers. Some (including two owners) say it's fine, while others say
it's a violation of the health code and could get them shut down.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has actually read the code and
understands what it says. If it does, in fact, permit customers to bring
their own containers, I'd like to publicize the eco-friendly cafe
mentioned above and solicit information on other places that tolerate
bring-your-own-container dining. If the code doesn't allow for customers'
containers to be used, I'll instead keep mum about where I go for
carry-out, and will contact my council member about changing the law.
