Hello,

A neighbor was asking if it is possible to put magazines with glossy covers in our condo's newspaper recycling?

Does anyone know?

He also asked about shiny cardboard like cereal boxes.

Thanks everyone!

If a condo building has three or fewer units, it will be covered by DC's
residential recycling program, which accepts all paper and paperboard
except for items that have been contaminated by food. Glossy magazines,
shiny carboard cereal boxes, and even envelopes with plastic windows are
accepted.

However, if the building has four or more units, it won't be covered under
DC's residential recycling program, and instead will fall under the
category of commercial recycling. Commercial recycling is carried out by
private contractors, and they vary in what materials they accept for
recycling. The DC government requires them to accept "paper", but I don't
know whether this has ever been defined to answer questions like the ones
raised here. The only way to know for sure what a given recycling
contractor will accept is to ask them directly.

My building's recycling contractor accepts only a fraction of what DC's
residential recycling program accepts, so I save a lot of my recyclable
waste and about once a month leave it in the bin of a person who lives in
a house.

Thanks Nora!

Yes, it dawned on me to check on the DC recycling web site, and it says to just remove the cereal lining the box. It's fine to recycle after that, it said.

Yes for the mags...I put cereal boxes (dry) in but don't know the official policy.
Cheers,
