Little Rock Sustainability Summit a Success!
Last week, approximately 200 Central Arkansas business and city leaders convened at the third annual Little Rock Sustainability Summit and discussed ways to become more energy efficient and reduce carbon footprints. Business leaders shared how they've saved money on water and electricity bills by coming up with cost-cutting measures. Little Rock city leaders highlighted the recycling program as a way they have tried to decrease waste. Presenters reported that more people are interested in becoming environmentally-friendly. Company leaders from L'Oreal, Heifer International, AT&T, and UAMS served as panelists on green business trends while a parallel track for high school students took place at Heifer International.

The Green Corner Store Becomes Second Business to Earn Certification
The Green Corner Store has become the second business to earn the new SBNCA Sustainable Business Certification. Owner Shelley Green began working with students last fall who were registered in the Sustainable Business Practices class at the UALR College of Business. Working with the students, The Green Corner Store completed six self-audits in the areas of environmental, economic, and social impact. The small business has now developed goals and an action plan and has become the second business to achieve the SBNCA Sustainable Business Certification. Congratulations!

Arkansas Earth Day Festivites
The Arkansas Earth Day Foundation will host the 2012 Earth Day Festival Saturday, April 21, on the campus of Heifer International headquarters in downtown Little Rock from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. "Rain or Shine"
Heifer International will bring animals from the Heifer Ranch in Perryville to illustrate ways that food and income can be cultivated sustainably. Heifer Village offers activities to enlighten visitors of all ages about the problems of hunger and poverty and how they can be overcome in an Earth-friendly way.
Kids’ activities including a rock-climbing wall, tie-dyeing and crafts like making a recycled musical instrument.
This festival allows visitors to drop off items as well as taking some home. Various nonprofits will collect household goods and e-waste including old cell phones and chargers, while Freecycle will collect unwanted items and let visitors bring them home.
An all-natural (but very smelly) event, the Great Cloth Diaper Change Challenge, will take place at 11 a.m., in which Arkansas parents join with others around the globe to try to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest simultaneous worldwide diaper change.
Arkansas Earth Day is currently seeking applications from booths (art/crafts, business, organization, display, nonprofit, educational, individual); sponsors (individual or corporate); volunteers (organizations or individuals); or performers (speakers, musicians, poets, dancers, etc.).
