Transportation Planner
Frontier Metropolitan Planning Organization
The Frontier Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the MPO for the Fort Smith urbanized area in
western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma is seeking a highly motivated self-starter to fill the immediate
opening of Transportation Planner.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university, two
years of transportation planning experience, GIS knowledge and excellent writing and verbal
communication skills.
Essential Job Function
Under supervision of the MPO Director assist in the development of short and long range studies for the
update of the Long Range Transportation Plan. Assist in the preparation of public and agency
presentations using software such as PowerPoint, databases, digital photography and graphic design.
Prepare draft responses to public and agency correspondence for review by the MPO Director. Secure
factual information and analyze, compile and interpret data in the field of planning. Perform field work
in connection with transportation planning and development.
Provide administrative support. Record Technical and Policy Board meetings and develop minutes as
required, prepare agendas and supporting meeting materials for all attendees, arrange, setup and
attend meetings and open houses. Implement an organizational file structure for the MPO and perform
day-to-day maintenance of the system. Maintain the website and keep it up-to-date as well as conduct
other public involvement tasks.
Maintain courtesy and professional image of the agency through example and by informing the Director
of areas in need of improvement. Be cognizant of factors which influence public relations and exercise
initiative in reviewing daily activities for public relations and program implications. This work is assistive
in nature and focuses on extending the capabilities of the MPO. A positive work attitude and ethic are
required as well as strong organizational skills and a desire to learn.
Develop and maintain the day-to-day file system of the MPO and keep it current
Develop meeting packets and minutes for the Policy Board and Technical Committee
Prepare MPO informational binders as requested
Develop draft correspondence, reports, presentations, publications, newsletters, contact lists,
surveys, databases, mailings and coordinate printing and distribution
Gather, evaluate and assemble information into special reports that include tables, graphs,
charts and explanations
Serve as the MPO Title VI/II Coordinator
Lead MPO staff member for transit projects and chair of transit subcommittees
Assist Director and other MPO staff with photos of regional projects for publications
Create and maintain information flyer about the MPO
Lead MPO staff member for public participation activities and social media
Create and maintain regional carpool program
Arrange and setup meeting and open house facilities. Attend meetings and communicate with
the public as required
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with government officials at all levels,
employees, private groups, the press and the general public
Attend transportation planning related training and conferences as funding allows
Gather local demographic, economic, school enrollment and building permit data to be used in
MPO studies
