environmental issues, a workshop was held in Thoothukudi and Kasi was

Workshop on Green Issues in Tamil Nadu & Puducherry: People’s Concerns
Concept and Invitation Letter
Background
Public Affairs Centre (PAC), Bangalore, People’s Action for Development (PAD), Tuticorin and Earth Smiles, Chennai, had together taken the initiative to promote green manifesto as a part of their joint initiative towards promoting environmental governance. In this regard during February 2011 a state level workshop was organized with representatives from state-wide CSOs of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry participated. The workshop through deliberations formulated green manifestoes for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Simultaneously a People’s Coalition for Green Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (PCGTN&P) was started. The release of green manifesto and the campaign of the manifesto during assembly elections with support from all the network partners was carried out.
As a follow up to the green manifesto, another workshop was held in Trichy with the support of Kudumbam –LEISA Network, where in the network partners agreed to document various environmental issues concerning people in different parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Based on these regional reports, it was decided that a comprehensive environment report on Tamil Nadu and Puducherry need to be compiled. Such a report, it was felt, would help in engaging the governments of both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and making crucial environment related policies thereby promoting green governance.
Next Step…
PAC as decided in Trichy workshop has taken the responsibility of compiling state level reports for both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. However, the report needs to be further discussed region-wise by involving various experts in their respective fields. This would not only strengthen the report and provide scientific evidence, but also add to the value of the report by widening the base.
In this regard, as planned PAC along with network partners and with the organizing support of local NGO – HOPE would conduct a workshop in Puducherry. The broad objectives of the workshop are as follows:
- To consolidate Green Manifesto initiative in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
- To share the region wise report on Environmental issues prepared by the lead NGOs and synthesize for further actions.
- To arrive at a road map for constructive engagement with the governments of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
- To take the PCGN forward with concrete action steps.
In this backdrop, PAC on behalf of PCGTN&P takes immense pleasure in inviting you on behalf of your organization to participate in one day workshop on 26 April, 2012 at Puducherry. The details of the venue will be mailed to you separately. Meanwhile, please suggest any experts (water, bio-diversity, forest, pollution, livelihoods) that you are aware so as to enable us to invite them. This would help us to broaden the deliberations of the workshop.
On 27 April, 2012 the core group as selected by the PCGTN&P (the Lead NGOs that worked on regional reports) will meet for in depth discussion.
