Save Our Hills * Save our City

PROGRAM NOTICE &  PRESS RELEASE: 20 Oct’11, 09-11AM, Hanuman Mandir, Vetal Hill (outside ARAI car park)

Join Hundreds Of School & College Students on Vetal Tekadi To Support

Their Call To : “Save Pune Hills - No Construction On The Hills”.

As one of the senior principals has said, “Thru participation in such events, students will be sensitised

to the damage to the city’s hills thru construction and what they can do to prevent it”.

Students from DAV Aundh, City International Kothrud, City International Pimpri, Gurukul School, Indira

School, Poddar High School and many more schools and colleges joining, along with all other sections

of society, will express their heartfelt concerns, thoughts and wishes on this serious matter.

The 1.5 hour program will include petitions, street plays, songs and other performances by student

groups, informative talks by Dr.Aneeta Benninger Gokhle, Padma Bhushan Dr.Madhav Gadgil and

Padma Vibhushan Dr.Jayant Narlikar.

Bearing in mind that the time to act is now, citizens are urged to show solidarity with this worthy cause

and attend in large numbers with friends and family. PLEASE ENCOURAGE SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES IN

YOUR AREA TO CONTACT US AND JOIN. THERE IS ENOUGH SPACE FOR ALL.

Wear something green, a cap to protect from the sun, and carry a bottle of water.

It is indeed unfortunate that even though Pune is ranked as the 5th most polluted city in the country, and

the PMC General Body has voted unanimously for the BDP (Bio-Diversity Park) two times in 2005, the

Government is, in fact, today considering permitting construction on the hills.

Wetal Hill, the most central of the city’s hills, has been selected for this significant event as it is a working
model of nature’s bounty benefiting a busy metropolis. Home to peacocks, deer, rabbits and hundreds of
other species of flora and fauna, it is also a fine example of large-scale afforestation efforts by individuals,
NGOs and the Urban-Joint-Forest-Management Scheme (under the MOEF) which has converted a near barren
hill into a major green lung and healthy environment very popular with morning walkers who throng in
thousands to savour a few moments of fresh air and natural beauty.
