Dear Fellow Residents,Having seen the pictures that Eric attached of the burglary evidence (broken stone walls), it seems to me that a 5-foot high live fence would be no deterrent. What I have noticed is that most of us do not use our house security lights (at the back, front and sides of the house) and rely only on the street lighting. I don't know by what percentage it will increase our electricity bills but if we all put on our security lights, there will be hardly any area of the estate that is in shadow after nightfall. This, in combination with the visibility afforded by the 1-metre fences, plus the enhanced security guard detail, would be much better, in my opinion, than trying to guarantee our security individually by erecting higher fences and installing gates. On 21 November 2012 20:42, Dr. Francis W. Dear Eric,Thanks for this important alert Eric. This rekindles my doubts about the new concept of gateless homes. While I appreciate the rationale behind it, we could at least reconsider its flip side and make some new provisions. While we should continue to rule out concrete security walls, we should reinforce the need for each home to have a reasonably good height of a life fence. A provision could be given for up to five feet for instance. Then provide for erection of (more or less standardized????) gates that can allow people to see through. That will make our home compounds more secure and less vulnerable to such incidences of burglary. It will also enhance sense of privacy.I know I may sound out of tune with modernity given that I belong to the golden age bracket. Nevertheless, please give it a thought. I believe any bad intentioned person will think twice before jumping over the life fence or the gate, and still our homes will remain decent.Francis (176)
