It was 25 years ago that the funky Phoenix Hotel opened at the gateway to the Tenderloin, thus birthing Joie de Vivre Hotels. I'm very proud that, against all odds, this little seedling sprouted from the cracked pavement and Joie de Vivre became the second largest boutique hotel company in the US. To celebrate our "joy of life," I wanted to let you know about our upcoming ArtPad art fair (www.artpadsf.com) May 17-20 at The Phoenix at Larkin and Eddy Streets. This will be our second year of clearing out all the furniture and dedicated every single room in the hotel to a different contemporary art gallery from around the US. With giant videos projecting on the walls of the building next door, synchronized swimmers in the pool and performance art in the courtyard, heady discussions in art panels in Chambers restaurant/bar, and, more than 15,000 art lovers joining us during the weekend, it's a "not to be missed, only in San Francisco," kind of event. Hope you can make it.
Most importantly, there are two seminal events during the weekend. On Thursday night, there's a preview benefit for Society for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art (SECA) of the SF Museum of Modern Art. And, on Friday night, there's an all-out benefit/party for Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF) as part of Burning Man which will give you a taste of that iconic festival without having to deal with desert dust in your hair. In sum, after a quarter century of creating joy in the world, I just want to say thank you for all your support. There's no way Joie de Vivre could ever have grown to its size or reputation without the care and feeding that we've received from the community.
