2016 Green Film Fest

Tom,

Two weeks until Opening Night at the Castro Theatre!

It has always been my dream to bring green films to the Castro. We're kicking off Opening Night in spectacular style with Josh Fox's new film How To Let Go Of the World (and love all the things climate can't change). Hot off its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, this film is a real call to action and a must-see to inspire your green core.

At the center of Josh Fox's film are communities coming together in the face of rising sea-levels, one of many Ocean films that you can dive into at this year's Fest. From producing local, sustainable seafood, to the perils of the global shipping industry, to the freedom of catching a good a wave, we're bringing you international stories about the importance of these vast, aquatic realms.

There are going to be lots of people in town during the Festival. Be sure to check out the filmmakers and other guests joining up for films, panels and workshops throughout the week.

See you there!

FOCUS ON: OCEANS

FREIGHTENED: The Real Price of Shipping
April 16, 5:45pm, Roxie Theater

World Premiere. An incredible 90% of the products consumed in the Western world come from overseas. This audacious investigation reveals the mechanics and perils of freight shipping. Film followed by discussion with director Denis Delestrac.

Of The Sea
April 17, 3:00pm, Roxie Theater

Fishermen are the stewards of some of the last wild food on our planet: fish. Meet some of the few California fishing families that remain, despite complex regulations, high cost, and competition with cheap farmed and imported seafood. Film followed by discussion with director Mischa Hedges; local San Francisco fishermen; and representatives from Real Good Fish and Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program.

Sonic Sea
April 19, 12:00pm, Koret Auditorium at SFPL Main Branch

In the darkness of the sea, whales depend on sound to mate, find food, migrate, raise their young and defend against predators. But human activity has radically transformed the ocean's delicate acoustic habitat, challenging the ability of whales and other marine life to prosper, and ultimately to survive. Free Screening.

Surf Shorts
April 15, 9:00pm, Roxie Theater

Meet the women surfers around the globe who are creating a new surf culture. Journey from San Francisco’s feared, fabled and often ferocious Ocean Beach; to a small Baja fishing village in Mexico; and finally to meet Iran’s female surf pioneers in new feature film Into the Sea. Film followed by discussion with Beth O'Rourke, Jeff den Broeder, Sachi Cunningham, Paul Ferraris.
