Dear Green Labs Colleagues,
I think you may enjoy this book, Science Communication in a Crisis: An Insider's Guide by Christopher Reddy. He is a chemical oceanographer like me, so I had a special connection to his work. Start reading it for free: https://a.co/fXqVjJd. It might make a good reading group book; there are many good tips about communication styles and timelines for audiences in the public, at-risk populations, first responders, journalists, social media and trolls, and of course, other scientists.

What stirs me is that this book provides a template for civic engagement and communication that I have not encountered before. Its insider’s perspective is invaluable, and it has broader implications for routine communication of science. I resonated with its descriptions of scientists expecting the outside world to be enthralled with our technical prowess while burying the lede, then scientists being disappointed that they weren’t re-invited to give further advice on pressing issues. The baseball metaphor was spot on.
These four legs (or quadrants) of “sustainable science” are the roles that science as an enterprise would ideally fulfill for the greatest social and environmental benefit. These quadrants are,
