Hi Green labs fam,

I hope you’re hanging in there during these crazy times. I wanted to share the lunch and learn opportunity below in case you’re interested. Feel free to share with others whom might benefit.

I’ve done workshops with Refugia Retreats previously and they are usually really powerful. I haven’t done a lunch and learn with them before, though the subject resonates deeply with me-- Learning to take excellent care of ourselves as we advocate for sustainability is critical.

Best,

Star

I humbly acknowledge and honor the land and people of the Mvskoke/Muscogee Creek and Tsalaguwetiyi/Cherokee Nations on whose ancestral land University of Georgia is located, and I acknowledge and grieve for those enslaved people who were forcibly brought to these lands.

[EXTERNAL SENDER - PROCEED CAUTIOUSLY]

Hello!

Refugia Retreats has two upcoming events that may be of interest to you!

1.    Free, online Lunch & Learn on coping with ecological grief on April 16, 12:00-1:00.

2.    Day Retreat on The Ways of Water: Learning from Water in Times of change on May 31 at Spiritwood Retreat Centre in Priddis, AB.

We would love your help circulating these opportunities with your networks. Please see below for more information!

1) From Sorrow to Solidarity: How Honouring Ecological Grief Protects Mental Health & Mobilizes Climate Action - Free online Lunch & Learn on ecological grief research, April 16, 12:00-1:00 MDT

Join public health researcher Stephanie Olsen and eco-social worker Alana-Dawn Eirikson for a free lunch & learn on April 16, 2025 on coping with ecological grief and eco-anxiety.

Refugia was recently chosen as the site of a University of Alberta research study that examined how practices for honouring ecological and climate grief can support wellbeing and deepen engagement with the climate crisis. This interactive and engaging session will highlight key findings from that research, and offer practical tools for honouring ecological grief and difficult climate emotions.

This session is designed for individuals coping with ecological grief or eco-anxiety, practitioners who work with these issues, and for anyone interested in cutting edge research on supporting mental health in the face of climate change.

For more information and to register, check out our website or register here.

2) The Ways of Water: Learning from Water in Times of Change - Day Retreat on May 31, 9:30-4;30 at Spiritwood Retreat Centre in Priddis, AB.

Refugia Retreats invites you to a day retreat on The Ways of Water: Learning form Water in Times of Change on May 31 at Spiritwood Retreat Centre.

Water is essential for life; making up 60% of the human body and covering 70% of the Earth’s surface. The rich biodiversity of beings on this planet exists in large part due to the sacred life blood that is clean water. Water is a shapeshifter who is in constant, dynamic relationship with the beings around it. Whether carving depths, creating muck and mud, freezing lakes, or as flowing sustenance, water is fluid and always evolving. In times of immense uncertainty, with challenges to our ecosystems, communities, and bodies, how can deepening a relationship with water teach us about radical presence, shaping and being shaped by change, and strengthening connection with ourselves, our communities, and the more than human world? What can we as humans learn from water about how to be in right relationship, how to flow with and find spaces of stillness within change, how to allow ourselves to change? How can the gentle and sometimes fierce power of water teach us to be attentive to the conditions of our lives? Join us to explore what surfaces when we pause to listen.

Refugia acknowledges that we are uninvited guests in Mohkinstsis on the traditional Treaty 7 Territory and acknowledges the oral practices of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations. This region is also homeland to the historic Northwest Metis and to the Otipemisiwak Metis Government, Metis Nation Battle River Territory, Nose Hill Metis District 5 and Elbow Metis District 6.As uninvited guests to this territory, we recognize our responsibility to de-centre our own voices while honouring the voices of the Indigenous communities that have lived here since time immemorial, as well as voices of the more than human world, by coming into respectful relationships with the plants, animals, humans and other life forms that call this region home.

"I often wonder what it would be like if we dared to love this life -- the fragile and the vulnerable, the endangered, daring to be humble before the magnitude of our beginnings, daring to learn our species into a stubborn and pliant wonder, until reverence shines in all we do -- until we live an economics of reverence - until it permeates education, development and health care, homes and relationship, arts and agriculture - a reverence for life, for planetary, social and personal wholeness. This is our purpose now. May we do it well, with thoroughness and love." - Carolyn McDade

Thank you for sharing Star!

I registered for the virtual event, and hopefully there will be a recording. Refugia’s land acknowledgement is also incredibly comprehensive, honoring, and well thought-out.

Best,

Christina
