Hi all,

I hope you are having a great start to the new year.

I came across SW nitrile gloves with EcoTek technology. The manufacturer claims the gloves “biodegrade by 92.6% in only 2 years and 6 months under test method ASTM D5526-12, a standard test method for determining anaerobic biodegradation of plastics in accelerated landfill conditions”. Are any of you all familiar with these gloves? I have not reached out to the manufacture yet, but I plan to.

Thank you!

We’ve found that most anything labelled “biodegradable” such as these nitrile gloves are not “compostable” in a commercial compost facility so we don’t endorse their use at all since it all ends up in a landfill anyway.

In the UK we have found that some of the glove recycling schemes are a thinly veiled marketing ploy to tie you into their brand of gloves… they WILL and DO recycle their gloves (and turn them into park benches etc) BUT if the waste is contaminated by a competitors brand of glove they either reject the load or charge a penalty… I’m not saying that would happen over there in the US… I’m just saying - “read the small print!”… (As always!)…

Correct, Gail.

The term “biodegradable” is essentially meaningless from a decomposition and returning to soil intention, especially in a landfill, and it has thus been illegal to use it in product promotion in California for over 10 years. “Compostable” has a meaningful definition (and ASTM testing protocol) which indicates it could be mixed into municipal composting streams, and return to soil.

It was helpful for me to hear that modern landfills can be described as “garbage tombs,” where everything is buried and will stay intact for decades, if not centuries.

Using less stuff is the best way to conserve resources.  How that plays out with Personal Protective Equipment is a tough concept and campaign.

           Keep working on it!
