Dear Colleagues,
Bringing “sustainability” to vivaria from an operational perspective is another frontier in the Green Labs and Smart Labs movements. After about 15 years, “The Guide” is being revised and we hope to bring some simple guidelines about HVAC safety and efficiency for rarely used spaces so that campus IACUC and veterinarians will have some latitude and confidence with setbacks.
In animal housing areas, animal welfare concerns are highest and setbacks may not b appropriate at this time. On the other hand, with the adoption of individually ventilated cages (IVC), air changes for the animals is assured, so room air changes may be adjusted accordingly to protect workers. Airflows have already been reduced in some cases, but these adoptions are inconsistent in my experience.
This is a very sensitive and mission critical environment, and the highest professional standards are required. If you have both interest and some expertise in vivaria, you may wish to sign up for this workshop.
One area where some simple guidelines might be helpful and reassuring would be when and how to compost bedding. The contaminant obstacles can be pharmaceuticals and/or GMO concerns, for example. General guidelines for easy wins could be a good first step for this edition.
Feel free to contact me directly for a general conversation about this topic.
Cheers,
|
