Hi all,

We’ve metered ULTs in the past using a Dent Elite Pro, but it would be great to have the flexibility of a plugin meter for future ULT metering.

It looks like the Watts Up Pro is no longer available. Does anyone know of a good alternative, or a vendor still carrying Watts Up meters?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Best,

Hannah

Ugh. Metering ULT’s = PIA (Pain in the…)

I tried to meter our ULT’s, but encountered the following:

PI’s unwilling to allow me to unplug their freezer for a few seconds

Incorrect voltage/ amperage between meter and freezer

Needing electricians to plug meter into electric box

Not that I gave up, but I decided to use peer data. Kathy from U Colorado Bolder did such an excellent job that I just estimated my freezers based on hers. And that was WAAAAAAAAY easier!

I don’t know of anything as good as the WattsUP meters for monitoring ULTs.  I ran into the same voltage/amperage problems as well, but now I have a full collection of adapters.

You could try Modlets, but I’ve found them to be unreliable.

I’m metering three ULTs now.  I will share the data when I’m finished.

PIA indeed!

Thanks Lisa and Quentin!

Too bad that WattsUP meters are not being sold any more.

I’ve been compiling peer data as I find it - thanks to all who have shared! I will make data available if I get metering set up.

Hi everyone,

CU Boulder still uses Dent Elite Pro meters for measuring consumption of ULT freezers on campus. This gives us voltage and amperage flexibility. We also use Kill A Watt meters for smaller pieces of lab equipment, but we don't use those on the ULT freezers.

Kathy and I are glad that the CU Boulder metering information has proven useful to some of you. The link to that data is here, in case some of you don't have it: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11p8hF9RBkntb1BppNzayC-udLqxTPgg4yEWdmbPO24w/edit#gid=11

This morning Kathy and I discussed adding a few new tabs to our metering spreadsheet referenced above. Over the past year we have had 23 Thermo Insight/Klatu Wi-Fi freezer monitors installed on various ULT freezers as a pilot of this system. These freezer monitors provide real-time energy consumption data for the freezers they are attached to, so we could add a tab for that onto the metering spreadsheet. Furthermore, Kathy has some energy consumption information provided by ULT freezer manufacturers that we can place on our metering spreadsheet too. We will work on these items over the next few weeks.

Best,
Christina

Hello again everyone,

Just wanted to update the group and let you know that there are now 2 new tabs on the CU Boulder metering data spreadsheet which include energy consumption information from ULT freezer manufacturers and the real-time data we are gathering for the 23 ULT freezers on our campus that are on the Thermo Insight wi-fi freezer monitoring system, which also tracks energy consumption. This metering data is always available on the CU Green Labs website, and we are continually adding to it. Hopefully these updates are helpful to some of you!

Best,
