Hello Green Labs Community –

I know some of you run green labs programs that provide freezers on wheels for labs to do sample cleanouts, defrosts, and as back-ups in case of failures. Do any of you have recommendations of energy efficient -20°C freezers or 4°C refrigerators rated for flammable material storage? I’d be interested to hear what any of you have purchased in recent years and if these units are working well for you.

A situation has been brought to my attention where a lab replaced a -20°C flammable-rated freezer for the TSX2320HA model (EnergyStar & ACT certified). They measured the energy consumption of their old freezer in comparison to the new TSX2320HA (4.3 kwh/day), and found out that the old freezer consumed less energy (2.7 kW/day). The team is looking for more energy efficient options before replacing any more -20°C freezers.

ADDITIONAL FREEZER MEASUREMENT NOTES:

  • Old freezer:  18 cuft (15 + 3 in door).  Measured full.
  • New freezer in 129: Thermo Scientific TSX series; model TSX2320HA; 20 cuft (no storage in door).  Measured empty.

I am asking some follow up questions about the metering equipment used and a suggestion to meter the new freezer again once it is fuller, since units are usually more energy efficient once they have some thermal mass inside. But if anyone has any recommendations, I’m all ears and would greatly appreciate it! Many thanks for reading!

Warm regards,

Christina

This is really interesting! How bizarre the new unit used more energy than the old. Intrinsically safe freezers are different from standard freezers in that the motor and other potential sparking hazards are all on the OUTSIDE, so as to prevent flammable vapors stored inside from igniting.

I think you’re on the right path in questioning the metering process. Are they comparing apples to apples? Also, why did they replace the original freezer to start with if it was functional and only using 2.7 kWh/day? What was the brand/model of the original--If they advertise a lower energy consumption, it might be a good idea to suggest they pursue ACT/Energy Star.

UGA has quite a few Intrinsically Safe (or Flammables) freezers, though we haven’t talked about energy efficiency much with these other than to encourage clean outs, consolidations and sharing. Most commonly, these units have very few items in them and the bulk of materials is stored in a standard unit sitting next to it.

Interesting riddle you’ve presented, Christina! Please keep us posted on what you find.

Thank you Star & Ellen for your replies and interest in this topic too!

If anyone has any insight into energy efficient flammables-safe freezers, I’d love to hear from you!

Be very wary… in the UK we have lots of manufacturers claiming ‘Spark Free’ but unless they are ATEX rated or ‘explosion proof! they are not 100% spark free…

Many -20 freezers ‘domestic conversions’ and are simply ‘inherently low spark risk’ - freezers tend to have a lower spark risk than fridges - because fridges Ofer have a light inside and fan assisted… anything with a fan inside not only is a spark risk but also an ‘arc’ risk… as the plastic fan creates a static charge and can arc between the fan blade and the plastic fan housing.

And as already covered - make sure that they are both internally and externally spark free…

Hope that helps..
