Dear Green Labs Colleagues,

Please consider joining this initiative on an individual level, and perhaps it will grow to an institutional or “enterprise” movement.

Provide a short video of a procurement or waste reduction breakthrough.  This is a great student opportunity with stipends available.

It also can be a great forum, such as Green Labs Planning, to share your questions and have a wide audience.

As representatives of the core constituency in R&D—the researchers, managers and technicians—your voice is strong to the supply chain that provides the materials, equipment and instruments to labs.  Please consider forwarding this notice to your procurement department, perhaps with a prominent PI, or five, as co-signers. They could then forward it to the major contract holders of supplies and equipment.

If you have direct communication with some of your major suppliers and distributors, send the request or invitation directly to them.

Then, ask to attend their next “Quarterly Business Review” with your procurement department, and ask about their concrete metrics of sustainable production, including embodied carbon, water and waste reduction.  And keep sending a Green Labs liaison to those QBR’s until “sustainable values” are a standard part of their reports.

Your evolving partnership with procurement or materials diversion can be a great story to share in a video!  Tell us that story!

Take care, and best of luck!

                               Allen

Join the Community of PracticeLaboratory supplies, packaging and waste can have a large impact on emissions and the environment, but many sustainable lab managers are working to address those issues and reduce the footprint of the research enterprise. To facilitate conversations among lab professionals and suppliers that help reduce the waste and toxicity associated with research products and packaging, the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) has lauched the Circular Economy for Laboratories Community of Practice.

Join the Community of Practice

A circular economy seeks to optimize resources and product use by reducing materials and waste, recovering materials for reuse, and recycling. All these topics will be addressed in this community through an online forum, webinars, roundtables, blogs, videos, and library of resources. I2SL welcomes the exchange of information among lab users and suppliers and will uplift new ideas to improve lab sustainability.

There are several ways to participate in the Circular Economy for Laboratories Community of Practice:

  • Browse the website. Visit www.circulareconomy.i2sl.org/ to read a blog, watch a video, or peruse the library.
  • Pose or answer a question. The online forum is currently discussing disposable gloves and animal bedding composting; add your thoughts or ask a question of your own.
  • Create a video. I2SL is looking to inspire others with “PHIL (people helping improve labs) Talks.” Stipends even are available to students and lab sustainability leaders who have stories to tell.
  • Write a blog. The In Circulation blog will focus on key issues of interest to lab sustainability managers, and I2SL welcomes contributors!
  • Submit resources. Community members will share materials to help advance circular economy in labs; participants are encouraged to register for the community to get full access to resource.

Become a part of the circular economy community! Visit www.circulareconomy.i2sl.org/ and join the first webinar, which will be scheduled later this fall; participation is free, but registration is encouraged. The Community of Practice was made possible in part by a 1% for the Planet contribution I2SL received from Cell Signaling Technology.
