Hi all,

A question for the water experts on the list: Is there an easy way to determine the depth of water table at a given site with a borewell dug up? Asking around the site, I received different answers -- from 30 ft to 60ft.

Another question -- does the water table rise during the monsoons? If so, is it possible to estimate the difference in water table, for monsoon and summer months, at a site that receives around 2000 mm rainfall annually?

I suspect there would be some different but I'd value expert opinion.

Thank you.

Best,
Manu

I figured that a small piece of wood tied to the end of a thread dropped into the pipe would do the trick. As the wood reaches the top of the water and floats, the tension in the thread would reduce and that point would determine the depth of the water table.

This actually is the best method. Also, recently saw at the CSE office, an electric instrument which works on the same principle but can sense very minute tension. It is for assessing very deep ground water tables, and also through narrow bore holes.

Thanks Sandeep and Swapan. Still need help on the second question:

Does the water table rise during the monsoons? If so, is it possible to estimate the difference in water table, for monsoon and summer months, at a site that receives around 2000 mm rainfall annually?

This is for North India, at a flat terrain site with sandy soil.

Thanks,
Manu

Dear Mr Manu Sharma,

you had asked for an easy method to measure the water level in a bore well, Yes this watr level is STATIC WATER LEVEL, we have very good non invasive electronic portable unit, called WELL SOUNDER 2010PRO. Please visit our web site www.lexushydra.com for more details.
This instrument can measure upto a depth of 600 meters with or with our pump in it.
