Gould is interested, so start talking to him about joining the league.

Is Ed paying $100 to get out of the league?

"Also, there is a $100 fine for leaving the league without lining up a willing
replacement.  The fine will go toward paying the entry fee of the team
we find to replace you, though you shouldn't drop out cause it screws
everyone else over.  If you don't like any of these rules, let me know
and I'll find your replacement now and save you some money later."

Obviously I'd like to not pay $100 but understand the spirit of the idea.  Glad to find my own replacement and have several in mind. However, I think the group may want input in who joins as the group may have a preference and may want to avoid my getting someone who potentially doesn't live in Memphis and none of y'all know to join just so that I avoid paying the $100.  This scenario is the reason I gave the notice I did. There likely is still a month before the draft so I don't feel there's not a huge rush.

Don't worry, Ed. It's mob mentality at its finest. Everyone wants a piece of the rape but no one wants the jail time. They see easy pickings and are hiding behind some mandate from a questionably sober dictator. Get Gould on board and we can forget the whole thing... Or don't find a replacement and I'll personally turn this rape into a murder.

Right, as long as we get a good replacement, I don't care if Ed pays the $100, and no one has to be murdered. The point of the fee is as an incentive for someone to join an in progress keeper league. It may be tough to convince someone to pay 175 for a team with eds keepers or with a chosen keeper from a diminished pool.

Yes, but the incentive misalignment still exists - I'm incentived to find the person who costs me the least to join while the other members of the league have other criteria like location and familiarity.

I admire everyone's logic (incentive misalignment?), butm as for me, I serve the Realm.  Geer, as usual, is correct.  The $100 is to encourage someone new to take over a team that they didn't draft.  By next year, the fact that they didn't draft the this team is much less.  the "fee" is not to punish anyone or to keep disinterested owners in the league.  A disinterested owner is much worse for a league than dropping out.

Ed- you're right too that you are encouraged to find a person who costs you the least, but the fact that you have to find someone who wants to commit to at least three years and pay $175 means that you will likely find someone into fantasy football where they would make the league more more competitive and fun. It also seems unlikely that someone would be willing to make that commitment also to play in a league with a bunch of people to whom they have no connection.

But the main incentive (which seems to be working) is the general desire not to screw people over.  The fee is needed when someone drops out a week before the draft like a jackass. Not Ed in this case, who made sure not to screw us over too much and told us early, giving an opportunity to find a replacement.  And (presumably) we don't want to make Ed pay $100 when we have plenty of time to find a replacement.

Without knowing why Ed wants out, ideally he could find someone to split the team with him and do the football stuff while still being part of it.  Or even more ideally, he could find an "Andy-like" owner who is really involved and committed but not very good.

I've thought of a way to solve this problem:  Ed should not leave the league.

By the way, our league has a celebrity:
