I highly recommend?Rick Rhodes' book, "The Ohio River -- In American History and Voyaging On Today's River."?It was published in 2007. You can find out more and?buy a copy directly from?Rick by going to www.heronislandguides.com??
This?is a hefty?320-page and well illustrated?book?that combines?about everything you would want to know about cruising the Ohio with?historical details to make your trip far more interesting.?It also includes information for?side trips you might wish to take?on the Muskingum River?and Kanawha River as well as heads up information on the lower ends of the Cumberland River and Tennessee River.
Although I?have not cruised the Ohio, I have talked with several who have, including Ron and Eva Stob, founders of the AGLCA. I have also traveled it aboard the passenger vessel, Riverbarge Explorer, from as far upstream as?Point Pleasant, Ohio, at Mile 265.6, downstream?to where the Ohio joins the?Mississippi River at Mile 981.2.
Reactions are mixed. But from what I have heard and seen for myself,?I believe it would make for a good trip.?The main points seem to be:?Pick your time, that is, when the Ohio isn't running a lot of water, and take your time because many of the towns along the Ohio make for interesting stops.
