I was struck by some similarities in last night’s The Secret Garden at Peppermint Creek and tonight’s THE WOMEN OF LOCKERBIE by Deborah Brevoort at Riverwalk Theatre’s Black Box. Both addressed grief and loss: last night a widower who couldn’t let go of his wife; tonight a mother who could not let go of her son. Not a musical, Lockerbie was more of an ensemble ritual, and a window into grieving and conflicted souls, as a struggling couple comes to Scotland seven years after the death of their son, looking for some kind of closure.

Director Amy Rickett has gathered an all-around excellent ensemble cast to present this emotional gem: Janet Colson, Jeff Magnuson, Gini Larson, Jackie Payne, Erin Hoffman, Gay Oliver and Doak Bloss deliver a profound exploration of the nexus of grief and love in this relatively short (no intermission) tribute to the tragedy of Pan Am Flight 103.

This is a theatrical piece that summons our common humanity. “Hatred will not have the last word.”

The Women of Lockerbie continues through March 13, 8pm Fri/Sat and 2pm Sundays
$12/$10 general seating
482-5700 for reservations, which assures admission (only 80 seats available) but not a specific seat; it was quite full opening night, so plan to arrive early.

MOBB Protests She Kills Monsters

(February 22, 2016; Lansing, MI)--Monsters Organized for Better Behavior (MOBB) is asking its members and supporters to boycott an upcoming Lansing theatrical production. MOBB is upset that Lansing-based theatre company Ixion seems to be encouraging violence against innocent hobgoblins, trolls and kobolds with its next show, She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen.

"I'm no wizard," says MOBB spokesman O.G. Re. "But kills sounds like a bad thing to be doing to monsters."

MOBB first learned of the show when a trio of bugbears reported being assaulted by a pair of armored maidens wielding swords.

"Weze just asking for directions," said the bugbear spokesman, Broke Tusk. "One minute we're waving hello and next evil girls rained down pain and fury on us. All we wanted was directions to Old Town."

In light of the unprovoked violence, MOBB is suggesting that all monsters avoid The Robin Theatre, 1105 S. Washington Ave. Lansing, MI March 19, 20, 26 & 27.  "Don't go, dangerous!"

MOBB will be holding a torch and pitchfork vigil to stop the violence.

"If you cut us do we not bleed," asks Re. "No matter how cool limited edition Ixion die is, not worth seeing monsters die.”

SHE KILLS MONSTERS - Ixion Ensemble performing at The Robin Theatre, 1105 S. Washington Ave. Lansing, MI March 19, 20, 26 & 27.
