“Can Black people and other communities of color get a Fairview?”

This play by  Jackie Sibblies Drury, centers on the Frasier family—Beverly, Dayton, Keisha, Jasmine, and Tyrone—preparing for Grandma's Frasier’s birthday, but things shift when a group of White Friends: Suze, Mack, Jimbo, & Bets contemplate what it may be like if they were of another race.  Things shift dramatically when this group of white friends “get their wish” and begin to portray and distort the Black family's story, culminating in Keisha's powerful call for authentic representation and asking the looming question: Can Black People get a FAIRVIEW?   

Characters:

• Beverly: A middle-class Black mother striving for a perfect family dinner, stressed by her family's dynamics.

• Dayton: Beverly's husband, who offers reassurance but is somewhat detached from her stress.

• Keisha:(*lead vehicle in storytelling) Beverly and Dayton's teenage daughter, dealing with typical adolescent issues but also sensing something deeper is wrong.

• Jasmine: Beverly's sister, who drinks and challenges Beverly's vision of perfection.

• Mama Frasier: Beverly's mother, who locks herself in the bathroom, refusing to come down.

• Tyrone: Beverly's brother, a lawyer, who might miss the dinner. 

• Suze: A white actress who takes on the role of Mama, embodying a version of Black womanhood.

• Jimbo: A white actor playing Tyrone, adopting racialized stereotypes. Unfiltered Jokester

• Mack: A white actor playing Erika (Keisha's friend), presented in drag as a caricature. Has reduced Latinx people down to “sexiness & spiciness” 

• Bets: A white actress who appears as an exaggerated, jazz-infused version of Mama. May be Olive skin toned. Striving to maintain proximity to whiteness. Possibly and accent or limited command of English.
