The Department of Theatre presents Echoes from the Banks of the Red Cedar.Through a collaboration between the College of Arts & Letters and the College of Music, this production tells a unique tale through music, dance, and dialogue. Inspired by William James Beal’s seed experiment, this play is written, choreographed, and directed by MSU’s own theatre and dance professor Alexandria Davis!
The work is a postmodern exploration rooted in a series of investigative questions explored with Department of Theatre students and faculty mentors about William James Beal’s research and Michigan State University’s legacy as a Land-Grant institution. The performance interweaves various narratives and social commentary to examine the cultural foundations and values that help shape an evolving Spartan identity. Professor Beal’s groundbreaking seed experiment, which began in 1879 and is recognized as the world’s longest-running scientific experiment, serves as both a metaphor and inspiration for the performance, encouraging audiences to reflect on what lies dormant beneath the surface of our intercultural scholastic landscape. If I plant you, will you grow?
