Registration and supervision of students:  All registrations for each school must come through that school’s coach.  The coach or another teacher must be present at the contest.  We ask that parents not attend.

Updated Word document attached.

I’ve been getting a number of questions from elementary and middle schools, so I typed up this summary for the Scratch participants.

I’m also attaching all the keys from last year’s packet.

Schedule:  The Scratch contest is from 9:00AM to noon.  Recommended arrival time not later than 8:00AM, to sign in, purchase pizza if desired, and in general get settled in.

Cost:  $30 per team of 1-3 students.

Equipment:  We would strongly prefer that each team bring a laptop and charger.  Dulles can supply a limited number of laptops if absolutely necessary, but frankly we would rather not mess with it and your teams would no doubt prefer to use equipment they are accustomed to.  A printer may be brought if desired.

Scratch version:  You will need an offline version of Scratch, as there will be no internet access during the contest.  Either version 2.0 or version 1.4 is fine.  If you have been using the online version, it is suggested that you practice with the offline version.

Food:  You may bring lunch or purchase pizzas for $15 each.  Generally one pizza feeds a team.  If you are purchasing pizzas, you must order before the start of the contest.  Pizzas will be delivered around 11:00AM – noon.  Concessions will also be available.

Contest format:  Problems will be solved live and scored on the computer.  The practice packet sent out previously is last year’s packet for practice.  If you want more practice material, please email me and I’ll see what I can dig up.

Please let me know if there is anything I have not answered.

Looking forward to seeing you!

Subject: You are invited to the Dulles High School programming contest on February 3rd, 2018

I’m sure I’ll find some error/omission in my information/registration documents as soon as I hit “send,” but I gotta send this out sometime…..!

You are invited to the fourth annual Dulles programming contest on February 3rd, 2018!  We will have Java Advanced, Java Novice, and Scratch (for elementary, middle school, and high school novices) divisions, plus a UIL-style written test.   A detailed information form is attached.

The Scratch contests will be graded on the computer; the Java contests will use PC2.  A previous Scratch packet is attached – if you would like the keys, please email me.

Please reply, using the attached registration form, by Thursday, January 25th.  A rough estimate of numbers as soon as you can get it to me would be appreciated.  We can accommodate 100+ Java teams and at least 20 Scratch teams at each level, so hopefully everyone who wants to attend can do so.

Don’t hesitate to email or call if you have any questions.  Please feel free (nay, encouraged!) to forward this to anyone I’ve left out.  (Conversely, please forgive any duplicate or unwanted mailings, or let me know and I’ll correct my email list.)

Looking forward to seeing you!
