Dear all,

Hope you are well.

It is great to see so much interest in developing the local community
and the local players as this is definitely where the future for China
is. I can't wait until there are highly competitive teams pretty much
full of local talent.

As mentioned in the various pieces written to date, it is a
combination of factors including access to key resources and the
willingness and ability of more experienced people (ex-pat or local)
to dedicate time to pass on knowledge and give direct coaching in
order to help develop the local population.

It can be observed that there has been some important progress such
as:
- Beijing based formal training sessions and drop-in which has
attracted more local participation in the last year than in previous
years
- Experienced Beijing people travelling to Tianjin to help further
develop Tianjin based talent
- Sponsorship of BJ/Tianjin based locals to travel to Shanghai and
Hong Kong to broaden their experiences/exposure with unprecedented
local participation this year
- The new Tianjin carnival (apologies that I cannot make it for work
reasons).

From the work done to date, it is very clear that (a) there is a lot
of raw talent in and around Beijing/Tianjin, (b) there is a growing
interest, and (c) there is starting to be a pool of experienced local
people (eg. Sandy, Ben, Steven, Qi, Lily, Nick, Edward, Tina, Xia Zhi,
Speed, and many others as well not named).

I believe going forward we should focus on two areas:

1. Helping the experienced local people to continue expanding their
own skills/experiences as well as assist them with nurturing those
people who have come forward with their own interest in learning
more. This will help to further solidify the local base which is an
important foundation for growing the local community and ensuring
sustainability in locally in China.

2. Provide a forum for local people to not only observe experienced
people at work, but also allow them to go beyond 'shadowing' and
participate as they become comfortable.

For the first point, I believe direct coaching from experienced
players is key and we should continue to do as much as possible in
Beijing on a regular basis through the current weekly sessions. This
direct coaching should not only include practical demonstrations and
practice, but also should expand to some white-boarding and/or multi-
media fim sessions as certain concepts are possibly better
communicated in alternative forms.

While it is also desireable to conduct more and more sessions at the
key universities in Beijing and at Tianjin, this becomes a practical
challenge for the coaches. I believe the experienced people will
continue to try their best to arrange to visit the universities in
Beijing and Tianjin, this will necessarily be more sporadic and we
should also explore ways for the outlying Beijing university or
Tianjin people to visit Beijing as well to increase the amount of
contact in any given time period. Would be interested in knowing what
people have to say on this thought (if it's possible).

On the second point, I believe the current ongoing sessions in Beijing
organised is a very good forum and we should think about how to more
local attendance as this is a great way for people to see ultimate in
action even if it is on a short field or indoor.

It would be great next year if we could have even more local teams
join in at tournaments and perhaps we can even realise the dream of
having a Beijing team.

Looking forward to hearing more on this and working together with you
all to help bring about this progress.

Take care and have a great time this weekend.

Hi Ken,

Nice email. There does definatley seem to be good developoments
happening in Beijing.

You are correct when you say that developing the local talent is the
way to go.

From what I can see in Australia, Taiwan and even Singapore, the
growth of the sport has been via local talent and through University.
They have more free time and it's easier to recruit as they form
student clubs.

What might be a great way to showcase a high level of ultimate, or at
least play at a higher level than pick up is to organise Grudge
matches. It might be Young vs Old, Jan-June babies vs July-Dec
babies, Inner Ring Road vs Outer Ring Road. I think the match between
BJ alumni and the BJ team the week before HK was real high level
ultimate.

you only think that because you weren't actually there.  the alumni bb grudge match featured a high level of overthrown hucks to space.

that's very exciting.  i hope people are really playing in all those cities.

have you been in touch with any of the players from hong kong?  one thing we've tried to do on several ocassions to help the  group in tianjin is send  a group of experienced players out to run clinics and help teach fundementals.  i'm sure some of the people in hong kong would be up for doing the same thing.  you might want to shoot an email to tim edwards, Timothy...@international.gc.ca or go to www.hkupa.org

you can also get in touch with kwong, who lives in guang zhou.  he's not really that good at frisbee, but he's handsome, and as far as i know, single, so you should talk to him and see if you can coordinate something. kwongy...@gmail.com

also, so we have an idea of numbers, how many players do you have in shenzhen?  how often do you play?  is there one group, or more than one group?

i'm going to open up a google excel sheet tomorrow in order to keep track of this information. then we can compile the contact info for every ultimate community in china.
