Hi every1

CGPA is basically Commulative grade point average

it's formula is

CGPA= (Sum of (Credit Hours x GPA))/ total credit hours

but grading criteria might be different

HI anupama!

the cgpa is calculated as follows
(the current cgpa - 2) /2 to get equivalent of 4.

hey ,
if u calculate that way than u have to divide ur cgpa with 2.5
for example if u have 8/10 then ur cgpa would be 8/2.5=3.2 out of 4

hi all,

There is no need to convert percentage to GPA. all universities in US knw that we are following the percentage system in India. so, no need to convert.

having said that, there are some univs in india like anna university (chennai) which give their aggregate marks in CGPA on a scale of 10 - in such cases , u got to enter ur marks as " CGPA - **** on a scale of 10.0" thts it.

still, if u want to knw how to calculate gpa, i hav given u a sample, below. do chck it out.

example - say this is your 1st semester marks:

1. math - 86
2. english - 80
3. elec circuits - 78
4. elec devices - 56
5. digital communication - 45
6. ethics - 90
7. lab 1 - 95
8. lab 2 - 99

marks for quantising your grades:
s-10 pts (marks equal to and greater than 90); a-9 points (80-89); b-8 points (70-79); c-7 pts (60-69); d-6 pts(55-59); e-5 pts(50-54); f - fail - 0 pts.
HERE, I HAVE ASSUMED LESS THAN 50 AS FAIL.

credits for the above subjects :
math - 4, english -4, circuits - 4, devices -4, ethics-3, digital comm-3,
lab1 -2, lab 2- 2.
(credit means the number of hours in of that particular subject in a week - it will be given in the syllabus book, most probably).

so, to calculate GPA for the above , u need to first quantise the marks u hav got in various subjects with the credits and the relative grades.

so, math will be => 9*4
english => 9*4
elec circuits => 8*4
elec devices => 6*4
digital communication => 0*3
ethics => 10*3
lab 1 => 10*2
lab 2 => 10*2

which would be => 36+36+32+24+0+30+20+20 = 196

total credits for the semester => 26

so, the GPA for the semester would be:
196/26 = 7.538 on a scale of 10.

similarly you got to calculate for all the sems, and --- you will arrive at a figure like --- 2000 or 3000 odd in the numerator and around 200 odd in the denominator.... and the result you get after division would be your CGPA or cumulative grade point average.

GPA and CGPA are distinct in that GPA - (in india) is calculated only for one semester, whereas cgpa is for the entire undergraduate course.

hope my computations helped those who wanted to see how gpa is calculated... enjoy life,  and all the best to all gre toefl takers and also to those who have started apping!!!

With warm regards,

Best to send your grades as such and not make any GPA calculations.

(cg + 2)/3 is a very very optimistic way of calculating, and not
accurate. Mostly this chart is used for calculating GPA -

percentage
90-100 4
85-90 3.5
80-85 3
75-80 2.5
70-75 2

and so forth. Most univs abroad are aware of the reputations of
universities in India and hence a 8/10 from IIT will be viewed
differently from a 8/10 from college of engg, guindy, etc.
