It is time for action in a big way. The very essence of these
“grc” news groups are at stake at the moment. Now before anyone
starts jumping down my throat hear me out. A thread started yesterday
or so about the fact that these news groups are now being picked
up by Google and are being archived by them. At first look, it
looks like “so what?” But, in reality we have a major problem
here folks. We have all been very complacent about the fact that
our ISP addresses and complete news posting headings are open and
available for anyone to see. We got used to it, as these are private
forums, and because of Steve’s privacy policy we all have felt
safe. I know that I would not have been posting all of the posts
that I have in the manor that I have in the past if I thought it
was going to be like all the rest of Usenet. On regular open Usenet
I have always used a very different privacy procedure then in here.
Another very important point is that people in these forums have
been very open and have disclosed private information about themselves
and their computer set ups, ISPs etc. This information was never
meant to be out on the open in Usenet. Now that Google has entered
into the picture, it is just a matter of time before other news
servers follow suit. What is most likely to happen, is that now
people will no longer be open and candid, nor will they disclose
exact details about their private and corporate configurations.
It will also be very difficult for someone seeking help. How
will such a person ever be able to feel safe about disclosing the
private information that is often needed in order to get help?
Also, forget about your Cecil ID, because Google archives faster
then your ability to change your mind and remove a post.
Steve, for his own reasons, has tried to take this conversation
out of the main stream, and he moved it to another forum from its
origin. That was wrong, because this affects all of us, and it
should be all of us that make this decision. What is needed now
is an open discussion about what to do. Steve has already stated
that he has options should he choose to implement them that would
stop Google, but he has stated that he does not see a problem with
Google making all of this public. I feel he likes the idea, and
for a number of reasons.
Forget about the “x-no-archive: yes” bit, as this is nothing more
then and experimental tool that does not have to be honored by
any news server or archive. Google says that they will honor it,
but they can change their minds at any time. Also, who is to say
what the practices of other news servers will be?
The intention of this post is to bring all people into this discussion,
and to make sure that everyone is aware of the consequences if
things stay the way that they are currently going. Please feel
free to respond, and if need be, please contact Steve and let him
know how you personally feel on this subject.
Obviously there is much more to this topic, but this should be
a good starting point.
Thank you, and please let your opinions be known. We need to hear
from all of you lurkers as well, as this involves everyone in these
forums.

It's a private news server that does not require a userid to post to.
"Public" to most people familiar with UseNet means that the news server is
propogated on UseNet. grc.com is not propogated.
