Hambrid,

I have an old Gamespy version (2.2.3.4) that contains no spyware. It
works fine for any games from the Quake III era and before. Only thing
it has in the Shareware mode is a small banner ad in the corner, but it
doesn't use one of the advert services like Aureate. No idea what the
ads are actually for, since they are apparently blocked by my HOSTS
file... I can send the installer to you if you want. It's 1.6MB, so make
sure you have enough room on your mail server! ;)

Your version is obviously one of the latter "good" ones - some versions of
GS actually don't install when they see their adservers being blocked in
HOSTS because it "violates their user agreement" - even though you've
already paid for the product. Reminds me of AOL - you pay to see ads. Still,
it's nothing a good firewall can't fix.

Could you perhaps provide a http/ftp link to download it from? I'm very
interested in using a version of GS.

Cheers

Well...I installed it a LONG time ago, and just recently started using
HOSTS to block ad servers, so this one might refuse to install. However,
it runs just fine with the ad server blocked (all I ever get in the ad
space are blank boxes and the occasional Gamespy logo from the program
itself), so you could disable HOSTS during the install and then
re-enable it later.

It only works with games from around the Q3 era and before (April 2000
is the date on the install file), but almost every multi game since then
has a pretty decent multiplayer browser. About the only exception I can
think of is NASCAR Heat, and John Deere (not the lawn tractor!) has
created an excellent server browser for that game. The only reason I
even use Gamespy is to find Q3 mod games, since the Q3 browser only
filters by the internal game types, not by mods.

I'll see if I can upload the install to my web site later...I'll post
the URL later today if I can! :)

It gives you the option to update to the new version , I should have
stuck with the old one hehe:) I used it for Rogue Spear. That's a '99er
but I don't know if I want GS again . When I was logged in I would get a
barage of "0" port pings and that just didn't seem right.

OK, that'd be great - thanks

Cheers
