Lapandav is a 1993 Marathi romantic comedy film directed by Shravani Deodhar and produced by Sachin Parekar and Sanjay Parekar. The film stars an ensemble cast of Ashok Saraf, Vandana Gupte, Vikram Gokhale, Savita Prabhune, Ajinkya Deo, Varsha Usgaonkar, Sunil Barve and Pallavi Ranade. The film won the National Film Award for Best Marathi Feature Film and the Maharashtra State Award for Best Actress for Pallavi Ranade.
The film revolves around the hilarious misunderstandings that arise when two married couples suspect their spouses of having an affair. Abhijeet Samarth (Ashok Saraf), the lazy owner of a gymnasium, lives a wealthy lifestyle in Pune along with his advocate wife Asavari (Vandana Gupte), collegiate daughter Rasika (Varsha Usgaonkar) and widowed father Mr. Samarth (Bal Karve). His advocate friend Anant Mahashabde (Vikram Gokhale) also lives a wealthy lifestyle in Pune along with his homemaker wife Ulka (Savita Prabhune), collegiate son Aseem (Sunil Barve), schoolgoing daughter Chinu (Sai Deodhar) and widowed mother Mrs. Mahashabde (Pratibha Amrute). Both Abhijeet and Anant get along every Saturday with Asavari and sometimes Ulka as well, and enjoy some drinks and poetry together. Their harmonious lifestyle changes hilariously when both Ulka and Abhijeet come across two anonymous love letters apparently addressed to Anant and Asavari, respectively, and begin to suspect that their respective spouses are having an extramarital affair.
The film is a classic example of Marathi comedy that blends wit, humor and romance. The film has a brilliant script by Mangesh Kulkarni and Sudhir Moghe, who also wrote the lyrics for the songs composed by Anand Modak. The film has some memorable dialogues and scenes that will make you laugh out loud. The film also has a social message about trust and communication in marriage. The film showcases the acting talents of the veteran actors who play their roles with perfection. Ashok Saraf and Vandana Gupte are superb as the insecure husband and wife who go to hilarious lengths to spy on their partners. Vikram Gokhale and Savita Prabhune are equally good as the innocent couple who are clueless about the accusations. Ajinkya Deo and Varsha Usgaonkar play the young lovers who are caught in the crossfire of their parents' suspicions. Sunil Barve and Pallavi Ranade are adorable as the college friends who help them out. Pallavi Ranade especially stands out as the bubbly and smart Mugdha who has a crush on Aseem.
