Netflix is undoubtedly the leader in the streaming wars, boasting 269.6 million paid subscribers worldwide as of the first quarter of 2024. With its excellent catalog of original series like "Stranger Things," "Bridgerton" and "Wednesday," as well as crowd-pleasing films like "Nimona," "Damsel" and "Hit Man," it's easy to see how Netflix became the industry leader it is today.

However, because it is the most popular service, Netflix doesn't offer many deals or discounts. The streamer has chosen other methods of boosting subscriber numbers, such as introducing a lower-cost ad-supported plan and cracking down on password sharing.

Unlike most other major streamers, Netflix does not offer a free trial. The company discontinued all free trials in the U.S. back in 2020 and is not expected to bring promotional trial periods back any time soon.

Still, it's free Netflix, which is not nothing, and being able to stream new seasons of "Cobra Kai," "Emily in Paris" and "Bridgerton" for the low cost of nothing at all is still pretty appealing for those looking to save on streaming.

Typically free trials set up an auto-renewing subscription which you need to manually revoke before it is first called on if you don't want to continue with the subscription at the end of the trial. See View, change, or cancel your subscriptions - Apple Support for details. You can cancel the subscription and potentially request a refund via for the most recent payment that was taken, particularly if you can argue that you haven't made any use of the service.

In 1995, a then-21-year-old Ellis was convicted of first-degree murder and armed robbery following two mistrials. Twenty years later, a court ruling reversed those convictions and Ellis was out on bail waiting for a fourth trial when cameras started rolling.

In 2018, prosecutors dropped those two charges against Ellis after the passage of time and the uncovered corruption within the Boston Police Department in the 1990s compromised their ability to secure another conviction. Ellis, though, was still guilty, they said.

Since its beginning in the streaming world back in 2007, Netflix has been a pioneer and a primetime player that brought us quality, original shows (Black Mirror, Stranger Things, The Witcher) and movies (The Irishman, All Quiet on the Western Front, Marriage Story) to remember.

As streaming has evolved and changed throughout thee years, streaming services have also been changing in structure, content rights, and pricing. Despite the increase of competition, Netflix does not offer any sort of free trial. Even though the service does have a free trial page in the Netflix help center, it simply states that Netflix does not offer free trials and points to links on how to change your Netflix plan or cancel your Netflix membership.

Although Netflix doesn't have a free trial directly, you can still technically get free Netflix through other means. The only true "free" option available is T-Mobile's Netflix on Us benefit that offers a free Netflix when you sign up for certain Go5G plans of the service. Both Verizon and Comcast offer subscription bundles that can help reduce the overall cost of Netflix, but these plans don't give you the service for no additional cost.

Luckily, if you are looking for a free streaming service trial, there are still multiple competitors that offer quality content and a chance to sample their streaming library for free. Check out these various alternatives below:

Directed by documentary filmmaker Brian Knappenberger, The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez is a 2020 Netflix miniseries about the 2013 murder of Gabriel Fernandez, an eight-year-old boy from Palmdale, California, who endured prolonged abuse by his mother and her boyfriend. The documentary series offers an inside look at the trial, as well as an eye-opening investigation into the government systems that failed to protect Gabriel despite multiple reports and warning signs.

When I saw people talking about a new Netflix true-crime series that was to do with a young person being abused, I thought I knew what to expect and prepared myself for its upsetting subject matter. But this hit a lot harder than I thought it would.

The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez is a really emotional watch so do be warned of that beforehand, because it could be a trigger for some viewers. However, it will ultimately serve as a wake-up call to those in charge and bring viewers together to call for action, for those involved to admit to their wrongdoings and for measures to be taken and the system reexamined to hopefully save children in need like Gabriel in the future. We can only hope that something like this will never happen again, and for the cases that too often slip between the cracks to become a thing of the past.

The case has captivated the public starting in 2022 when the body of Boston Police officer John O'Keefe was found in the snow outside a Canton home. On July 1, it hit a legal crescendo of sorts with a mistrial, the jury split on Read's innocence.

The documentary does not yet have a title and is currently in production with Sandpaper Films. It will be co-directed by Danielle Johnson and Rob Miller. They said it will focus on the days leading up to O'Keefe's death.

A "Dateline" episode appears to be in the works. Last summer, NBC released a clip of an exclusive interview with Read and said an episode titled "Taillight Murder" is forthcoming. So far, no release date has been given for the episode.

The Law&Crime Network is an excellent resource for videos covering the Read trial. From this video reporting on Read's cover-up defense to live and unedited footage of the hearings and trial proceedings ready and available to watch for free on YouTube, including the delivery of the mistrial announcement.

"The Murder in the Morning" podcast on Apple Podcasts, hosted by Tony Brueski and Stacy Cole, covered the broad strokes of the case and gave their own first impressions on their April 17 episode. Their frank manner and conversational poise make a grim and distressing case like this easy to follow and understand.
