Help with Pasture Evaluation

Hello,

 

Looking for input or resources for a local grazing group getting together next Friday to evaluate pastures. The host-grazier is wondering about how to set up some activities that could get them information on the following -

1. They want to look at a pasture they reseeded spring 2023 to decide if they leave it or add more seed. They’ve got a lot of orchard grass that dominates and so they are wondering what they could be looking at to help them decide whether to add more seed/what to seed.
2. They want to look at outwintering treatment of unrolling hay and were wondering if there’s a way to count manure patties and get a sense of fertilizer value they have out there.

Hi Alex,

There is this pasture condition scoring framework that you could use…maybe more detailed than you need, but there’s a simple two page checklist at the end of the publication that could be useful. Also attaching an older, simpler version.
