PRESS RELEASE
New Delhi. 13 March. A has been staged from Jantar Mantar to Parliament of India, to plead for 'Right to Education' be enacted with immediate effect by central government, in which hundreds of people from various parts of the country participated. Ranjan Mohanty, national convener of Campaign Against Child Labour, informed that the central government is scared to pass the Right to Education Bill 2005, which is lying in the parliament for years. Advocating for a Common School System the National Coordination Committee of Indian Teachers' Organizations, Central Secretariat of the Campaign Against Child Labour (CACL-CS) and People's Campaign for Common School System organized the march on popular call.
India, being a welfare state must strive to secure to its citizens the rights which make their life worth living, as eloquently proclaimed in the Constitution of India. The Right to Education, in this direction, tops the hierarchy, as it is the sine qua non of a civilized, vibrant and progressive society.
But even after more than five decades of planned development, we, the people of India, much to our chagrin, find the access to education of millions of children of our country severely constrained with many strings attached to it. The Right to Education Bill 2005 as a sequel to the 86 th Constitutional Amendment is yet to be placed before the parliament.
Hence, to bolster an already formed national opinion on the dire need of having education as a fundamental right, a protest march to Parliament was organized on 12 th March 2007 from Jantar Mantar, New Delhi and a National Consultation was held in New Delhi on 13th March 2007. These prevailed upon the central government to enact a central legislation on making education a fundamental right, a long overdue. Prof. Abani Boral, convener of National Coordination Committee of Indian Teacher's Organizations, and Dr. Basanti Devi, co-chairperson of People's Campaign for Common School System were the leading persons of the march as well as national consultation.
