Dear friends,
Tonight I'll be sworn in for a second term on the Town Council.
Together with my colleagues, we'll hold a brief ceremonial meeting to
begin the new term. Once again, thank you so much for lending your
support in so many ways to my reelection campaign. It would be great
to see you in the audience. The meeting will be in the Council
Chambers beginning at 7 p.m. Dessert reception to follow!
In other news, last night I enjoyed attending the annual holiday
auction benefit for the Orange County Rape Crisis Center. Sen. Ellie
Kinnaird spoke about her successful efforts to pass legislation to
combat human trafficking in the state, an issue with obvious
implications for the Rape Crisis Center. In April, the Carolina
Women's Center at UNC will host its second biennial conference on
human trafficking. I'll be honored to moderate a session on legal
advocacy.
The work on the homelessness project continues. The December meeting
of the executive team of the 10-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness
will be held Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in the Southern Human Services
Center. As a special treat, we'll have a viewing of the new film
"Faces of Franklin," a documentary made by UNC Campus Y students
featuring homeless people in our downtown. I saw it last week when I
took part in a panel discussion of homelessness sponsored by the
Campus Y. Here at the end of the semester, there must have been about
100 students in the audience. I was impressed with them.
As we enter the holiday season, please consider gift ideas that will
help those in need of shelter. Make gifts to the Inter-Faith Council
on behalf of people on your list. Another alternative is the "Real
Change from Spare Change" program. Gifts to this fund go directly to
providing social services through a street outreach program serving
the downtown district. For more information, see
http://www.realchangefromsparechange.org/
This is a new program that deserves our support. Congratulations to
the Downtown Partnership on its creation and successful launch.
Again thanks to you all. I'm excited about the new term, honored to
have the opportunity to serve the community for another four years. It
wouldn't be nearly as much fun or rewarding if it weren't for all of
the good work that so many of you do to help keep Chapel Hill livable
and lively and inclusive.
Cheers,
Sally
