Dear friends,

It's been a terribly sad and disturbing couple of weeks since the tragic and senseless murder of Eve Carson. I'm grateful that I had the chance to get to know her even just a little bit. It was enough to know that all the things you've heard about her are true. Eve's death is a loss from which we will not recover, but we will go on, and, I hope, in her memory we will work a little harder to make our world a better place.

On this UNC web page I recommend the remarks of her father, but with a warning: be prepared to cry.

N&O columnist Ruth Sheehan wrote about the father's remarks on Monday.

I happened to be sitting in a waiting room where I noticed a husband point this column out to his wife. After she finished reading it, he pointed to a certain passage and said, "This is the part that gets me: he says these kids are going to change the world--right!" His cynicism was palpable. It made me want to cry all over again. For I think Eve's dad is on to something: "But I must tell you — even with an aching heart, and yet with such hope and love — that the friends of Eve, and their generation, will not be denied. They've got miles to go, and missions to keep, and we will be so much better for their undaunted perseverance!"

Highlights from the March 17 council meeting

1. Orange United Methodist Church

We gave final approval to the plans for Orange United Methodist Church to expand its facility. The design of the new much larger worship space is constructed in such a way that the new building will not overshadow the historic original church building; it's a very nice plan. Following the Planning Board's suggestion, the church is open to allowing its expanded parking lot to be used as a park & ride lot, should there be any interest.

2. Fordham Boulevard/Manning safety upgrades

Two years after the death of our friend and neighbor David Galinsky, who was killed while attempting to cross Fordham Boulevard on foot, we are about to see some actual safety improvements to this difficult intersection. They include street lights, a marked crosswalk and pedestrian countdown signals, "stop ahead when flashing" signs, and some limited sidewalk installation.

Because Fordham Boulevard is a state highway--two highways actually, N.C. 54 and U.S. 15-501--getting even this much of an improvement approved through the DOT has not been easy. We still have hopes for a pedestrian bridge (or tunnel). I believe it can happen. But it's going to take patience and persistence and some of that "undaunted perseverance."

Extracurricular

On March 8, I enjoyed speaking about my Council work to the Orange County chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of women educators. Four scholarships were awarded to Orange County senior girls who intend to major in education.

On April 3-4 I will be participating as a moderator in a conference sponsored by the Carolina Women's Center at UNC called "Combating Sex Trafficking: Prevention and Intervention in North Carolina and Worldwide."

On April 11 I will be a panelist at an affordable housing summit sponsored by the Chatham County Affordable Housing Task Force.

As always, your comments are welcome.

Yours,

Sally
