Dear friends,

Greetings on this cold night in an exciting historical moment! This
morning I and several of my Council colleagues took part in a very
moving MLK Day service at the First Baptist Church. I've been to many
of these events, but never one that was so packed with people and so
full of energy and emotion. Rev. Troy Harrison of St. Joseph's CME
Church challenged us all to think about what we mean by a
"sustainable" community: one sustained by bonds of care and concern
for each other. By now, some of the folks who were at that service,
along with other lucky folks from Chapel Hill, are up in D.C. for the
Inauguration.

Among those are a special group of six young women from the Trinity
Court neighborhood. They were recognized at last Monday's Council
meeting. Working within the Ella Baker Women's Center, which is led by
UNC communication studies professor Patricia Parker, these young women
form a community action group called Striving Sisters Speak!!! They
are with hundreds of other community organizers and activists who were
invited to the Inauguration of Barack Obama by Earl W .Stafford, a
Virginia businessman who paid $1 million to reserve 300 rooms at the
JW Marriott on Pennsylvania Avenue. You can read more in today's
Washington Post:

Best wishes to them all for a fabulous adventure. Meanwhile, the rest
of us are due for some snow! Here's the Town's update as of 5:30 this
evening.
