Icche - A Bengali Movie About a Mother and Her Son
Icche is a 2011 Bengali movie directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy. Plot Summary
The movie revolves around Ruplekha Mitra (Sohini Sengupta), a middle-class housewife who has devoted her life to her only son, Soumya (Samadarshi Dutta). She is obsessed with his academic success and wants him to become a doctor. She controls every aspect of his life, from his food to his friends to his hobbies. She even hires a private tutor, Manas (Bratya Basu), to ensure that he gets good grades.
Soumya, however, has different interests and ambitions. He loves music and wants to become a singer. He also falls in love with Tanima (Bidita Bag), a girl from his college who shares his passion for music. Soumya tries to balance his mother's expectations and his own desires, but soon finds himself in a conflict with both. He rebels against his mother's authority and decides to pursue his dreams. He joins a band with Tanima and participates in a music competition. He also plans to elope with Tanima and start a new life with her.
Ruplekha, on the other hand, is unable to accept her son's choices and becomes more possessive and paranoid. She suspects that Manas is having an affair with her and tries to sabotage their relationship. She also tries to stop Soumya from leaving her by threatening to commit suicide. She even resorts to violence and blackmail to keep him under her control.
The movie depicts the psychological effects of Ruplekha's obsession on Soumya and how it affects his mental health and happiness. It also shows the consequences of Ruplekha's actions on her own life and marriage. The movie ends with a tragic twist that changes the lives of all the characters forever.
Reviews and Awards
Icche received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.
