The findings might help to personalize playlists for patients, using artificial intelligence to analyze individual physiological and psychological responses, and help to evaluate the effectiveness of existing music therapies, suggest the researchers.
Despite evidence of the therapeutic effects of music for mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and post traumatic stress disorder, there's no consensus on what defines healing music, note the researchers.
These were compared with 330 classical music pieces written by 10 composers and played on 11 instruments; 50 pieces of traditional five-element Chinese music; 100 Jazz recordings; and 300 emotional music recordings from the Chinese affective music system (CAMS).
Traditional Chinese five-element music comprises five different tones or pitches, each of which connects to the liver, heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys, corresponding to the five elements of wood, fire, metal, earth, and water.
The CAMS covers seven distinct emotional states: happiness; calm; sadness; fear; disgust; anger; and surprise. Each clip is accompanied by a set of indicator data, two of which were used in this study: valence, which describes the ability of music to evoke feelings of happiness or sadness; and arousal.
Classical music accounted for the largest proportion (28.5%) of recommendations, followed by pop music (18%). None of the remaining genres accounted for more than 15% of the total. Five participants nominated "Castle in the Sky" by Japanese musician Joe Hisaishi.
Based on this, three potentially distinctive acoustic features of healing music were identified that were independent of genre, differed from regular music of the same genre, and were consistent across various different types of healing music.
The SD of the roughness describes the extent to which perceived irregularity or harshness of a sound deviates from the average; the MFCC captures the amount of energy in different frequency ranges, with mean referring to the average, and period entropy referring to the randomness or predictability in patterns of frequency components over time.
"For example, dissonant intervals in music with a high roughness can evoke feelings of tension or suspense, whereas consonant intervals in music with smoother sounds can evoke a sense of relaxation or resolution," they explain.
And they echo those of previous research indicating that music is a universal language that transcends culture and genre, say the researchers. This includes traditional music forms, such as pilgrimage songs in Nigeria, high-life drumming in Ghana, singing bowl music in India, and five-element music in China.
But they suggest that incorporating the three acoustic features into music could enable health care professionals to personalize therapeutic playlists for patients, by harnessing AI algorithms to analyze physiological and psychological responses in real time.

Research Excellence Clusters are networks of researchers spanning multiple disciplines at UBC who organize to solve key challenges facing society. These clusters transcend the traditional boundaries associated with departments, institutions, and funding agencies. And they are expected to target issues and engage in research that would not otherwise be possible.
The School of Kinesiology has several emerging and established clusters that include: the Origins of Balance Deficits and Falls, the Physical Activity for Precision Health Cluster, and the BC Diabetes Research Network. These are very exciting areas of interdisciplinary research that are providing innovative and valuable solutions with big impacts on the health and wellbeing of society.
Dr. Mark Carpenter, co-lead of this cluster, explains, Our research cluster has developed one of the most comprehensive collections of cutting-edge balance measurement tools and techniques. It is unique because both the physiological and the psychological factors that contribute to balance problems and falls are examined. The psychological factors include the fear of falling which has been shown to greatly increase fall risk and can directly impact postural control even in otherwise healthy individuals. For example, imagine walking across a beam. If I put the beam on the floor most people could walk on it without falling. But if it is raised most people lose their balance and fall. So, our balance behaviour can come from perceived threat or the emotional context of the situation. We use this approach in our lab to see how fear can contribute to different aspects of balance control.
The goal of the Exercise Physiology Degree Program at West Liberty University is to reflect those of the American Society of Exercise Physiologists (ASEP) as well as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), while providing students with a solid foundation in factual and conceptual mastery of human movement study. The curriculum is designed to promote critical thinking skills, effective writing, clear articulation and presentation, and analytical skills that transcend the subject matter. Students are also encouraged to participate in, and learn to appreciate the application of scientific research to real world problems and/or service for the benefit of the community, with consideration of the moral and ethical issues involved. The program aims to develop well rounded individuals. Students will be equipped with the skills necessary to succeed in graduate school and/or professional fields of study, and will have a diverse array of options upon graduation.

Performance standards are the same as those set for all students attending West Liberty University. In order to graduate all Exercise Physiology majors are required to have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 in their major field, concentration area and overall.
Located in Main Hall, the Exercise Physiology Lab is a large, open lab space that gives students access to the tools and instruments that exercise physiologists use to assess health, physical fitness, and performance. All of our equipment is available for students to practice and for research projects. Equipment includes a metabolic cart, treadmills, cycle ergometers, a rower, free weights, bench, squat rack, electrocardiography machines, skinfold calipers, bioelectrical impedance analyzers, sit-and-reach boxes, heart rate monitors, and more.
