I'm trying to automate the extraction of a number of files compressed with 7-zip. I need to automate this process, because a) there are many years of data I'd like to unlock and b) I'd like to share my code with others and prevent them from repeating the process by hand.

I would strongly prefer a solution that does not require the user to install additional software (like WinRAR or 7-Zip) and execute a command with shell, although I acknowledge this task might be impossible with just R and CRAN packages. I actually believe running shell.exec on these files with additional parameters might work on computers with WinRAR installed, but again, I'd like to avoid that installation if possible. :)

Hello, I get a weird prompt box reading 7-zip ERROR when I'm trying to install the program. I'm installing autohotkey from the mainsite (this one, duh) and whenever I'm trying to open the installer or w/e you get when you install the .exe from the site a big prompt box that reads 7-zip ERROR pops up, since I don't got 7-zip I downloaded it, re-downloaded AHK but the problem wouldn't go away.

What should I do? Is there any other sources to install it? It's quite a pity since AHK seems to be one of the only virus free and legit automation macro programs out there . I'm running windows 8.1 btw. Thankyou on beforehand.

Hi All, getting the error '7-zip returned an error while trying to extract the archive' when attempting to launch Arcade roms (mame). Only happens when i have the 'extract ROM archives before running' checked in the emulation settings.

Hello All, newbie here. I recently installed Launchbox 13.0 and loaded a bunch of SNES roms from an external drive. The roms are zipped up. I am getting this same "7-zip returned an error while trying to extract the archive" error message when I try to launch a SNES game. I do have 7-zip installed. Any suggestions? Do I have to unzip all of them?

As long as you don't have an overzealous antivirus program quarantining some of your LaunchBox files we use a 7z dll placed in the proper spot by the installer to unextract files. If your emulator supports reading of zip files (or whatever extensions yours are in) then you can go to Manage Emulators and just change your emulator to not extract archive on launch and probably avoid that process entirely.

I don't know if Launchbox can sort through this but some sets, like a Tosec set, zip up multiple versions of the rom in each zip. I recommend unzipping SNES anyway as it takes up no space, but open one of the roms in 7z and see if there is just one file in there or many. If there's multiple files I don't think the launchbox unzip feature will work. Edit: If you can't manually open any of the files in 7zip that usually means you didn't download the full files and will need to replace the set.

We are in the process of a server move, both to a new host and from a Server 2k8 box to a Server 2012 box. The server in question has a few drives that hold our sites and some utilities. These drives were duplicated exactly during the move. Data, folder structures, and permissions should all be identical.

7-Zip is installed on the server and I can do the actions it's trying to do from the GUI. I'm a developer and am not used to troubleshooting something like this, and Google for the specific error hasn't led me to any resolution.

The closest match I could find is a site that says the command-line tool needs a few .dll files if it's less than 150K. I found the tool at the referenced path above and it was over 150K. I copied the .dll files from the install directory to that directory anyway. This did not fix the issue.

Another reason for this error is when you have 7z.exe but do not also have 7z.dll - both are needed for the commandline program to work properly. Copying just these two files from the normal 7-zip GUI install folder is enough for a portable version of the commandline program on our CI.

I had a similar problem running '.\7z.exe' from a powershell script, the issue was that the .\ 'local folder' copy of 7z.exe was an older version than the one currently installed on my computer. To fix the issue I just copied the newer 7z.exe and 7z.dll files out to the local folder the script was using.

I downloaded 7-zip to compress my files as a free alternative to Winrar, but when I run it through VirusTotal it gives me an alert of a possible trojan. do you know if this program is safe, I know that Windows has a built-in function to compress but I prefer a more robust alternative. I am a bit worried, I would not like it to be malware, I would appreciate your help.
