Dear members,

letting aside the details of Grantha script for a moment, I would like to ask you a very basic question about palm leaf manuscripts in general: on which side of a palm leaf manuscript the first folio is supposed to be? In other words: from which side the manuscript is supposed to begin: the one where the cover is kept by a knot in the string, or the other part, where the string (when the manuscript is unbounded) is loose?

I ask you this (probably silly) question because this morning I realized, to my surprise, that the manuscripts I'm working on here are evenly divided in this respect.

Best wishes,

Marco
