Dear vinodh,

Recently I bought a laptop with Windows 7 installed. The damn thing is
not displaying unicode characters especially if i mix tamil and
devanagari together in almost all the browsers (IE9, Chrome,
Firefox).

I saw you had posted this problem already in several forums, were you
able to find any solution for this ?

Hi Sri,

I think you are using Arial Unicode MS (or some other Multi-Script font) for both, Tamil and Devanagari. If that's the case, do not do so.

If the same font contains character blocks, only one block will be displayed correctly ;-(

I guess you already saw this: http://www.virtualvinodh.com/tamil-grantha

Yes.Thats a bug with the rendering engine in Windows 7. I had complained about his in the Unicode forum. The Microsoft Guy said.. they will look into this. Thats it.

No solution until now.

Using a separate font for Tamil, and another font for Devanagari.

We can only hope tha the issue will be solved in the next release of Windows

Yes I am using Arial Unicode MS. This font in Windows XP is very clean
and both tamil and devanagari display is crisp. Its really unfortunate
it wont display in Windows 7.

A similar problem in my system also. But in IE9 it is ok. But in all other browsers, firefox, chrome, and epic it displays wrongly.

Raghu,

Does this mean other browsers have to be fixed?

Can you and Vinodh & others put up a web page, showing
how IE9 page looks comparing to Chrome, Firefox, IE pre-9, ...
then we can take steps to fix .

I have seen fwd emails boasting 40% of Microsoft workforce is from
India. Surprising nobody cared for this :(
We can put a page on how the font gets ugly in Windows 7. I will try
that soon.

Why don't you put up screenshot samples yourself? It shouldn't be a
problem for a NASA scientist, LOL! Most keyboards have PrtSc keys,
nah? Anyhow, the fact that it is working in IE9 is proof that Peter
Constable acted upon Vinodh's complaint. Too bad Microsoft doesn't
backport fixes like other open platforms do. Maybe Mr Ganesan can use
his widespread influence to convince Microsoft people to do that,
since he has often (such as on the INFITT WG02 list) expressed
enthusiasm for getting such technical problems fixed.

adiyen dasasya vignaapanam.
As requested by Sri Ganesan and Sri Ramana sarma, adiyen has attached the screen shots here.
I have referred www.sangatham.com for example.
In my earlier mail, I told IE renders correctly. But, strangely, IE also did not render it correctly today.
I have added the browsers names along with the name of the screen shot and for easy reference, I have underlined few words also.
At www.thinnai.com where smt Revathi Sankaran teaches Sanskrit, the same occurs.

For now I have managed to work around this by having different fonts
(Mangal for devanagari, Arial unicode MS for tamil)...

Seems to work so far.

But my problem is reading itself since the characters jump.

No sir, I was telling about reading also.

If you see this page: http://www.sangatham.com/bhagavad_gita/gita-chapter-1
it should look fine in Win 7 also, since i have used two different
fonts.

Yes! It can be read without any difficulty. But the default fonts, Latha for Tamil, Mangal for Sanskrit do not look nice.

adiyen just copied from your posting, pasted it in word, changed it into Arial Unicode MS and again copied and posted here.

Now both look identical except Sanjaya

If then, why the trouble when directly typing it?

Please look into the screen shots in the attached file. These are from www.thinnai.com

On a Windows 7 machine, if you go to http://www.google.com/transliterate/tamil
and first type some tamil text, copy it and then change the
transliteration to Hindi / Sanskrit and then paste the tamil text.

now whatever you type in hindi/sanskrit the letters are broken.

We will have to see, whether google provides any solution...
