Ironside was born in Toronto, Ontario, to John and Sophia (Stafford) Ironside, who were both active in the Plymouth Brethren. At birth, Harry was thought to be dead, so the attending nurses focused their attention on Sophia, who was dangerously ill. Only when a pulse was detected in Harry, 40 minutes later, was an attempt made to resuscitate the infant. When Harry was two years old, his father, John, died of typhoid at the age of 27. From a very early age, Ironside showed a strong interest in evangelical Christianity, and was active in the Salvation Army as a teenager before later joining the "Grant" section of the Plymouth Brethren.
In 1888, well-known evangelist Dwight L. Moody preached at a campaign in Los Angeles, with meetings held at Hazard's Pavilion[1][2] (later known as "Temple Pavilion"), which could seat up to 4,000. This was an inspiration to Ironside, who hoped to also be able to preach to such crowds one day. In 1889, after a visit from evangelist Donald Munro, Ironside became convinced that he was not "born again", and so gave up preaching at his Sunday school, spending the next six months wrestling with this spiritual problem. After an evening of prayer, in February 1890, Ironside, at age 13, received Christ. As he is quoted as saying years later, "I rested on the Word of God and confessed Christ as my Savior." Ironside then returned to preaching, winning his first convert. Though he was taunted at school, he was undeterred from his mission to win souls. Later that year, his mother remarried, to William D. Watson. Ironside graduated from the eighth grade, began working as a part-time cobbler, and decided he had enough education (he never attended school again, a decision he later regretted).
Fully illustrated. Includes all of the drawings from the original edition. What is the history between the Old and New Testaments? Most people are not even aware there is such a gap. But there is. A 400 year gap. When the Old Testament leaves off the Jews have just returned back from Babylonian captivity and the Persian Empire is in full swing. When Jesus enters the scene it is 400 years later. The Persians are long gone, the Greeks have had their time and now the Romans rule to roost. So what happened? Do we have any writings from this time? Could understanding this period of time help us understand the New Testament, the world of Jesus and the Apostles? The answer is yes. This exciting book by well-known author H. A. Ironside lifts the veil from this vital period of Jewish history and helps piece together the events that brought them from Malachi to Matthew. This book will be of interest to students of Biblical, Ancient Near Eastern, Greek and Roman history as well as all those who desire to know and understand the Bible for fully.
Ironside published this book in 1914. It is a history of the time between the last book of the Protestant Old Testamend and the New Testament. From Malachi to Matthew. For most Christians this is a silent and unknown time. What happened in those years? Why was there no prophet speaking for God? Are there any writings from that time that can illuminate our questions? In what way did this time help prepare for the coming Messiah and the rapid spread of the Gospel? What can archaeology tell us? Answering this question can help us really bring the New Testament to light. It was these preceding 400 years that paved the way for the New Testament scene. A must read for all Bible students. Complete with the original 1914 illustrations.
The miniseries Hollywood is almost forty years old and is responsible for a great number of silent film fans discovering the art. Alas, it has only been available on VHS and laserdisc but six episodes from the series are now available to stream from Amazon Prime. Directed by Kevin Browlow and David Gill, it features beautiful music from Carl Davis, a passionate affection for the silent era and interviews with industry veterans.
Ironsides refuses to talk to me, or any of the other robots on the ship. I have installed every part needed to fix the ship, but when I go to talk to him he stays silent and doesn't move. Is there a fix for this?
Josephus soon predicted that his captor, Vespasian, would be elevated as the emperor of Rome -an event which indeed did transpire three years later. For the remainder of the war, Josephus accompanied Vespasian and later his son, Titus, until Jerusalem was conquered and burned in 70 A.D. Therefore, he was an eyewitness to the tragic events which transpired and has provided us with a firsthand account as an ancient Jewish war correspondent.
Henry Allan "Harry" Ironside was a Bible teacher that made a profession of faith in the Salvation Army, was introduced to the PB thru the open brethren, then traveled as an itinerant with the Grant exclusive brethren, and pastored Moody Memorial Church for 18.5 years, a record for that time. He ministered among both open and exclusive assemblies throughout his tenure.
I had a similar problem recently, though obviously not about my mother-in-law. I had had some bad service from a person I've used regularly all my life. I was so upset I felt like never going back, particularly as the service has been slipping over the years. But the problem was that the person in charge was a very nice and rather old man, who I've become quite friendly with over the years. I didn't want to hurt him. So I asked a friend what to do. Leave him without giving a reason or have it out, and threaten legal action if I didn't get a refund?
But whatever you do, don't either seethe in silence or throw some horrible wobbly. That ghastly expression "clearing the air" in a one-off eruption very rarely does what it says. It can leave endless clouds of dust behind, which can take years to settle.
There were many notable early sound versions. A 1933 serial starred John Wayne and replaced the Musketeers with French Foreign Legionnaires. A 1939 comedy starred Don Ameche and the Ritz Brothers. The first Mexican version came out in 1942 and starred Cantinflas, who was the most famous Mexican comedian of the time. Republic Pictures made 51 westerns known as The Three Mesquiteers, loosely based on the Dumas, between 1936 and 1943. The 1948 Gene Kelly version, likely the most famous version for several decades, co-starred Angela Lansbury, June Allyson, Lana Turner, Van Heflin, Frank Morgan, and Vincent Price; it also famously had a scene recreated as the fictional silent film The Royal Rascal in Singing in the Rain.
Malone does not venture a guess as to the identity of the 'taner' or the narrative (p. 292). Collier, who restored the manuscript spelling of "taner," was also silent on the character and story of the play, but he does opine on its value as a commercial offering by noting that the play was apparently "a failure" because it was not given subsequent performances despite its substantial receipts of 73s 6d (p. 27). Fleay, BCED makes no comment on the play (2.298 #116).
