 Mayor, local businesses celebrate 10th anniversary of Motor City Match with newest location
Mayor Duggan and City representatives celebrated the newest local business assisted by the Motor City Match (MCM) program this week. The event also marked 10 years of MCM helping Detroiters open their businesses across the community.
Deputy Mayor Melia Howard joined Detroit business owners and employees in Spirit Plaza in downtown on Wednesday to celebrate the program's anniversary.
MCM was founded in 2015 to help start new, permanent businesses and expand existing businesses in Detroit’s commercial corridors by providing tailored assistance throughout the launch and growth process.
Since the program began, MCM has provided more than $20 million in cash grants that have led to 192 brick-and-mortar businesses opening in 159 individual Detroit neighborhoods, helping to revitalize commercial corridors.
The most recent business to open with assistance from the program is entertainment and event venue Candela Detroit, 3564 Vernor. Owner Paula Anderanin received a $100,000 cash grant in Round 24 of MCM.

Entrepreneurs looking to start or expand their business to a new location in Detroit must remain located within the city for at least three years, provide verification of new jobs created or existing jobs retained, and demonstrate a benefit to the community.

Detroit Police Department members connect with residents during National Night Out 2025
The Detroit Police Department brought neighbors together Tuesday for the annual National Night Out, hosting community-building events at every precinct across the city.
Residents were able to enjoy free food, live entertainment, and games, along with the opportunity to connect with their local police officers.
National Night Out is a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting police-community partnerships and strengthening neighborhood ties.
Each DPD precinct event offered a welcoming space for neighbors to connect with the officers who serve their communities, including the 12th Precinct’s petting zoo and bounce house, the 11th Precinct’s flag football games, and Ghostbusters at the 5th Precinct.

Poet Laureate jessica Care moore to share $1.1M in fellowship program
The City of Detroit's Poet Laureate jessica Care moore is among 23 poets laureate across America named fellows by the Academy of American Poets to share $1.1 million for community projects.
The Academy, a financial supporter of poets in the U.S., announced it will award $50,000 fellowships to 23 poets laureate serving across the nation. The fellowships recognize poets laureate for their literary excellence while enabling them to undertake impactful and timely projects that engage their communities through the transformative power of poetry.
moore, in partnership with The LOVE Building, will launch a literacy initiative in several neighborhoods across Detroit. Along with teaching artists, she will conduct a series of intergenerational workshops helping to tell the stories of new and native Detroit residents.
She also will record and release an audio poetry chapbook connecting the diverse voices of Detroit and collaborate with Detroit muralists to facilitate large murals with student artists from Detroit schools.

MDOT hosts open house Aug. 14 on County pedestrian bridge study
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) invites residents to provide input on how they use pedestrian bridges in their community during an open house on August 14. The event is part of a series that will be held in different locations around MDOT's Metro Region.
Attendees will be able to take a survey and view a presentation outlining MDOT’s efforts through this study to better understand how state-owned pedestrian bridges are used in the region.
Interested residents, community stakeholders and local businesses can join the event Aug. 14 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Henry Ford Centennial Library, 16301 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn.

City Council President Pro Tem James Tate launched Protect Your Crown, a campaign that highlights the importance of maintaining one’s mental health and addressing concerns without shame or fear.
In partnership with Pro Tem Tate’s Office, the City of Detroit Health Department is also granting full access to the online Community Mental Health Attitudes Survey.
All the information obtained from the 19-question survey is confidential. Survey responses will provide a picture of the mental health needs of Detroiters and guide the City’s efforts to obtain resources that have the greatest impact.

Detroit launches first-of-its-kind $700,000 Startup Fund to fuel job creation and talent retention
Mayor Duggan joined with Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) officials, City Council members, and startup ecosystem leaders to announce the launch of the first-of-its-kind Detroit Startup Fund.
More than 200 members of Detroit’s tech community gathered at Newlab at Michigan Central to celebrate the announcement. Newlab is currently home to more than 140 startup companies.
The startup fund will award 26 grants across two rounds in the next year. Those include 20 seed grants of $15,000 each and six scale grants of $50,000 each to Detroit-based startups. The fund’s first 13 grant winners will be announced in late 2025 and a second round will open in early 2026.
First-round applications are open at detroitmi.gov/startup and will close on August 25. Applications require detailed business plans and clear deployment strategies for grant funds.

Community leaders, residents hold Hour of Power: Day of Prayer and Peace, call for end of youth violence
City leaders, school leaders, and community advocates united in the heart of downtown last week to lift Detroit in prayer and stand in solidarity for peace, healing, and protection for young people.
The Hour of Power: Day of Prayer and Peace event was held at Spirit Plaza in downtown Detroit, featuring local leaders and residents who called for an end to the youth violence that’s been devastating families and neighborhoods.
During the event, leaders from across the city of Detroit urged residents to do their part.
City, community honor first responders who rescued and cared for 13 people after Littlefield explosion
Mayor Duggan, Councilmember Fred Durhal, III and Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms recognized Fire Operations members who responded to the Littlefield apartment explosion on March 31 and executed extraordinary rescues.
Mayor Duggan joined City officials and community leaders last week at the Adams-Butzel Complex to honor the heroic actions of Detroit Fire and EMS personnel who rescued and provided emergency care and transport to 13 individuals - six of them children - following a devastating apartment explosion on March 31.
A total of 13 residents were successfully rescued and received treatment, thanks to swift triage and transport by Detroit EMS supervisors and medic units, under the leadership of EMS Supervisor Captain Glen Goodson. Tragically, one resident, Brandon Bradwell, lost his fight for life in late April, about a month after the explosion.
The building was later declared structurally unsound and demolished. The coordinated and courageous actions of all responding units undoubtedly saved lives.

Fire Department welcomes 53rd Junior Fire Cadet class, in partnership with GDYT
Students at the Detroit Fire Department’s Junior Fire Cadet program engaged in hands-on search and rescue and water hose training at DFD’s Walter P. Rutherford Regional Training Center.
The 2025 Junior Fire Cadet class marks the program’s 53rd year, and the 10th year partnering with Grow Detroit’s Young Talent, a program launched by Mayor Duggan that provides more than 8,000 summer employment opportunities every year for Detroit youth ages 14-24.
As part of the six-week program, youth cadets practice a variety of basic firefighting and medical skills, including fire hydrant hook up, ladder climbing techniques and hands-only CPR.
