Detroit, MI — The Senior Tech Class, a free eight-week program designed to teach older adults essential digital skills, will kick off its winter session at the University of Detroit Mercy on October 18. This engaging and supportive program offers seniors practical, hands-on training to help them navigate the digital world safely and confidently. It creates an environment that encourages older adults to become more independent, informed, and connected, ultimately enhancing their involvement in the digital space.

Classes will be held at the University of Detroit Mercy, located at 4001 W McNichols Rd, Detroit, MI 48221, every Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Room 138 of the Commerce and Finance Building. The program will conclude with a graduation luncheon on December 13 at the Northwest Activities Center, Room 2, starting at noon. Every senior will receive a Certificate of Participation and enjoy a delicious meal prepared by Chef Greg’s Soul-N-The Wall, celebrating the success of this incredible journey.

This winter term focuses on critical online safety topics to help seniors feel more secure in the digital space. Each week, lessons will cover subjects such as:

  • Avoiding Phishing Scams and Online Fraud – Learn how to spot fake emails, suspicious texts, and deceptive websites. Identify red flags and verify the authenticity of online requests.

  • Recognizing and Preventing Viruses and Malware – Understand the different types of malicious software and how to protect your computer, tablet, and smartphone from infection.

  • Best Practices for Mobile Banking and Online Shopping – Discover safe habits for managing your finances and making purchases online, including secure payment methods and protecting personal information. (Guest Speaker: PNC Bank)

  • Setting Strong Passcodes and Using Facial Recognition – Get tips on creating secure passwords and learn how to use biometric security features like fingerprint and facial recognition for added protection.

  • The Dangers of Clicking Unknown Links or Opening Suspicious Emails – Learn why caution is essential and how a single click can compromise your device.

“We invite all seniors to attend this free program, as it is our goal to train, educate, and provide every participant with the tools they need to stay safe online, prevent fraud, and maintain independence,” said Instructor Clayton Cortez. “The Senior Tech Class fosters a welcoming, supportive environment where seniors can learn at their own pace, ask questions, and practice new skills without pressure. Our small, instructor-led classes ensure plenty of one-on-one support is available.”
