Hey all,

The Benzie Bus Grand Opening will be held from 2:30 to 6:30 on Thursday, November 10. (My previous email said 12:00 - 6:00.)

See below for more information on the event:

Come join friends as we celebrate the grand opening ceremony of the new Benzie Bus facility at 2:30 p.m., (formal remarks at 3 p.m.) on Thursday, November 10, at 14150 U.S. 31, about three miles east of Honor in Homestead Township. After the ceremony, an open house will be held until 6:30 p.m. Officials from the Michigan Department of Transportation, which is a key partner in the project, are expected to attend. The renovation and new construction of the 20,000-square foot facility for bus dispatch, maintenance, parking, and administration, along with a public lobby and transfer area, was made possible by federal stimulus funding and other state and federal support. No local property taxes were used for the project, and no local debt was incurred. Come out and see the new facility! For more information, call The Benzie Bus, (231) 325-3000 or toll free (866)-325-3380 or visit www.BenzieBus.com.

Hey Transit Subcommmers,

Don't forget: we have a monthly meeting scheduled for next Thursday, October 27 @ noon. I'm still waiting to hear back about the availability of BATA downtown TC Transfer Center. Expect an agenda early next week with the exact location. Pizza will be provided, so let me know if you can make it.

*New email format
As discussed at the last meeting, I'll be sending email updates about items related to transit in the region. This is the first of, what I expect to be, a roughly tri-weekly update. I'll try to keep the emails concise and relevant as possible. The emails and other relevant info such as meeting agendas and minutes will also be stored on the Grand Vision transit website

*If you would like to be taken off this list, please let me know. If you can think of anyone that should be added to the list, let me know. (Also, feedback is always encouraged and appreciated.)

In Action

This week, I sent a letter to the Acme Planning Commission on behalf of the Transit Subcommittee. The letter explains that the committee supports development in the township that accommodates a bus transfer facility. And that the committee believes that the facility should be accessible, safe, and connected to other modes of transportation. The letter is attached.

State Policy Corner

The The Michigan Land Use Institute works hard to ensure that state policy, as it effects this region, is reflective of the principles stated in the Grand Vision. This Wednesday, the governor will be laying out his plan for investing in cities and towns. He may also mention his transportation priorities. So, we hope the governor continues to keep keep rail, bus transit, complete streets, and maintaining existing roads and bridges a high priority. In any case, this will be one to watch.

I wrote about it here last week. And I'll be highlighting more specific policy recommendations in a follow-up post within the next few days.
