Dear Natural Resources Network Members,

The next meeting of the Network will be Tuesday, April 30 from 9:00 to 11:00 in the Steelcase Room at the Chamber of Commerce, 202 E. Grandview Parkway.  The April 17 meeting is canceled.

Before the meeting you will receive additional  information from Freya Bradford of NorthSky Nonprofit Network that will summarize our goal setting work from the last meeting, as well as ask you to complete an online survey to prepare us all for the April 30 meeting.

Also , below are two e-mails you might be interested in.  The first is a notice for  DNR’s Land Management Plan open houses, with the Traverse City open house scheduled for April 15.  The second is regarding the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments’ Input Expos for their HUD Sustainability grant, which we have discussed at Network meetings in the past.  The Expos will be held around the region between April 22 and April 30; a flyer is  attached.

Thank you and take care,

Andy

DNR seeks public input on

Draft Land Management Plan

at Regional Open Houses

   A series of informational open houses is planned to give Michiganders an opportunity to provide input on a draft land management plan developed by the Department of Natural Resources with the assistance of an advisory group.

   The plan, which outlines a strategy for DNR-managed public lands, is a requirement under a law signed by Gov. Rick Snyder last year that capped how much land the DNR can acquire for public use.

   The draft land use strategy calls for improved access on DNR-managed public lands and, for the first time, sets a standard for public access to the Great Lakes and rivers. The draft plan also includes a new strategy for the possible disposal of approximately 250,000 acres of DNR-managed public lands and promotes increased opportunities in southern Michigan. The plan also discusses objectives to grow Michigan's natural resources-based economy through the use of DNR-managed public lands. The DNR will seek additional regional input during the plan process.

   "The use and enjoyment of public land for not only recreation, but for natural resources-based businesses, is the focus of this land strategy," said DNR Director Keith Creagh. "This draft plan lays out a coherent and complete strategy with an eye to the immediate future, but also remains adaptable to meet emerging trends and shifts in land use and ownership. We welcome further public input on the plan."

The regional meetings are planned for;

Subject: Framework for our Future: Input Expos

As an engaged community member, I thought that you would be pleased to know about the following:

Please see the attached flyer regarding the upcoming Input Expos, which will be held April 22-30 in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, and Wexford Counties (see flyer for dates and locations). These open house style events are great opportunities for community members to learn more about housing, transportation, energy, and land use – and to share ideas, strategies, and solutions through a variety of activities and discussions.

Public input, comments, and ideas will be used in the development of Framework for our Future: Tools and Strategies for Supporting the Grand Vision. More information on the Framework for our Future project, and online RSVPs for the events, are available online at www.nwm.org/framework. You can also submit input via www.letsdecidehow.org.

Please pass this along to your networks, and we hope to see you at the Input Expos!
