Dear Stakeholders of the Northern Michigan Economy,

This email is meant as a primer and a save the date for, “The Northern Michigan Placemaking Summit: Investing in Our Cities, Villages & Commerce Centers,” being held on March 1st, 2011 from 9am-3:30pm in the Hagerty Conference Center at Northwestern Michigan College.

This exciting event will feature both Dan Gilmartin, Executive Director of the Michigan Municipal League and a lunch keynote from Bill Rustem, former advisor to Governor Milliken, current President and CEO of the issues management firm Public Sector Consultants, and recently appointed Chief Strategist to Governor-elect Rick Snyder. The two will speak of the strategic role of cities, villages and commerce centers in the future prosperity of Michigan, a strong and coherent perspective of state-level policy and strategy under the new administration, and the role of placemaking and regional collaboration for economic competitiveness in the global economy.

The Summit will also offer focused breakout sessions for local government leadership, economic development professionals and planning practitioners. The breakout session topics have been specifically chosen for local government officials in cities, villages and commerce centers to increase their capacity and access to economic development and planning resources. Preliminary topic titles include: 1) Planning for the Revitalization of Commercial Corridors; 2) New Tools for Housing & Reinvestment in Commercial Centers; 3) Leveraging Local Assets for High Quality Festivals and Events; 4) Creating Walkable, Bikable, Transit Friendly Towns; 5) Leveraging Regional Sense of Place for Economic Development; and, 6) Planning for the New Economy in Your Local Community. Sessions will be organized with panels of experts and practitioners. Moderators will be present for discussion and Q&A.

To close the day, the Summit will hold a plenary session entitled, “Strategies and Resources for Increasing Local Economic Development & Planning Capacity.” This session is meant to tie the day together by offering a strong panel of service and resource providers from throughout the region that can provide local government with the necessary capacity to foster local, regional and statewide placemaking strategies in Northern Michigan.

A very strong list of partners and sponsors have gathered for this event, including regional colleges, regional chambers, and regional economic development corporations, to name a few. Although expenses are still being worked out, the event will be kept extremely affordable. Lunch will be provided and delicious, with several local entrees available.

Further information for registration and a detailed agenda for the day will be mailed as a brochure in the first week of January. A follow-up email with an electronic copy of the brochure and links to online registration will also be sent at that time.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Hope to see you at the Northern Michigan Placemaking Summit!

Best,

Nigel
