I want to climb Mount Baldy / Mount Craig, the big rounded
mountain that overlooks Grand Lake. When seen from Grand
Lake, one gets only a hint of the fact that Mount Baldy is a
Gateway to higher orders of backcountry. The google Grand Lake
group will prove this during the summer of 2007.

The mountain can be climbed in a single day, but it is a long
walk in to its base (and back out after a climb). Beyond the
mountain there are special alpine zones that deserve more time.
What we are going to try to do here is synchronize a trek that
will establish a base camp at what is called Cat's Lair. This is
below Lone Pine Lake and near an alternative site that can be
reserved called Gray Jay. The earliest possible time to do this
is late May or very early June, so there is lots of time to
coordinate and plan things. There can be other expeditions
(involving others who will hopefully post their findings)
all the way into the fall.

Sounds good. Where is Cat's Lair?

I have often thought about climbing Baldy but never pursued it. What
route(s) are you considering? Do you approach from Paradise Park or
the upper East Inlet? I've been up to Spirit Lake a couple of times,
and it is absolutely beautiful. It is one of my favorite places in
RMNP.
