I don't have a super new system, it's a 2.4Ghz Core-2-Duo with a GT430 graphics card and Windows XP Pro, SP3. However, even so, I've run into problems running some older games, at least in hardware accelerated mode, probably because of the graphics card/drivers, so I've become a little leery about getting older games working.

I'm aware that there is a source port for Freespace II, but what about the first game? Is there something similar? If so, can someone point me to a step by step guide for getting the game up and running?

Yes, that's the only resolution supported by the game in 3D hardware rendering. If you prefer higher resolution, then you need to use Glide wrappers to play the game in 3Dfx Glide or check out the source port.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but using a wrapper to increase the resolution won't increase the game's internal resolution, right? I mean, the game will still be drawing the visuals at 640x480 and the wrapper will just be scaling them up?

One more question; Once I have everything installed via the launcher, can I just archive the whole directory in case I need/want to re-install it later? I'm a big believer in making local backup copies just in case the online sources should ever go down.

yes you can make a backup launcher can be installed into main freespace 2 folder eg: f:\games\freespace 2\Launchers\Knossos\
Remember to back up the registry entries for the launcher + freespace 2
ps: the launcher supports nearly 100 mods so you wont run out of things to play

The source port and the launcher both use the registry? I hate when freeware programs do that as it makes it more trouble to make a complete backup, versus just archiving the directory, INI files included.

In the past I've seen/heard of mods to make the game into Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, etc. Are these just sets of assets (models, textures, sound effects, etc) and then people make single, stand-alone missions using these assets, or have people written full-length single-player campaigns using them?

In other words, is there one big package that you can install and you have a 10-20 mission Babylon 5 or Battlestar Galactica game to play, complete with its own story? Or do you install the assets, then download largely unrelated missions that you play separately?

Sorry knossos doesnt store info in the registry, freespace 2 retail does though
babylon 5, diaspora, battlestar galactica beyond the redline, wing commander saga are stand alone and do not require freespace 2

If you like very high-res ships, like the ones in the cutscenes, then you can install the Freespace-Port for Freespace-2 open-source mod.
If you prefer the old plain nebulae over the ones in Freespace-2, then you should play Freespace-1 original.
If you're playing the original, either use a real 3dfx card and choose "glide" in 3d options, or emulate it with latest Nglide version. Because the ship-lights won't work otherwise: in the first mission, you can see the "Orf" cruiser, right? Does it have lots of bright white lights like windows? then you're ok! If those lights get bright/dark with the rest of the 3d model, then it looks ugly.

Satellite-based quantum communication is a promising approach for realizing global-scale quantum networks. For free-space quantum channel, single-mode fiber coupling is particularly important for improving the signal-to-noise ratio of daylight quantum key distribution (QKD) and compatibility with standard fiber-based QKD. However, achieving a highly efficient and stable single-mode coupling efficiency under strong atmospheric turbulence remains experimentally challenging. Here, we develop a single-mode receiver with an adaptive optics (AO) system based on a modal version of the stochastic parallel gradient descent (M-SPGD) algorithm and test its performance over an 8 km urban terrestrial free-space channel. Under strong atmospheric turbulence, the M-SPGD AO system obtains an improvement of about 3.7 dB in the single-mode fiber coupling efficiency and a significant suppression of fluctuation, which can find its applications in free-space long-range quantum communications.
