Seeking help regarding implications for missing 3rd Grade MCAS

My Daughter is in 3rd grade and we have a family wedding to atttend
(far way) during the MCAS test dates. As the make-up date is also
within a few days of the test we will be missing that too. Now I am
worried about the implications of this and am wondering if we should
miss the marriage. Here is what I want to know and hope this
information will be useful for all parents:

1. How critical is MCAS test at 3rd grade?
2. What are the implications of missing the MCAS test in the short
term and long term ?
3. Does the colleges look at all the MCAS scores for admission and
does the 3rd grade MCAS test matters?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Have you talked to the school superintendent or principal about any
impact?

As far as public school graduation requirements are concerned, only
the 10th grade MCAS is required - all students must pass that, and
have several chances to do so, by the end of their senior year.

I haven't heard of colleges looking at any MCAS scores for admission,
but as I have not yet been personally through the process, I can't be
100% certain. Private school students do not even have to take the
MCAS, so they wouldn't have any MCAS scores whatsoever (this I am
certain of, as one of my kids attends a private school and he has
never taken a MCAS.) At any rate, I have never heard of colleges
looking at achievements below the high school level.

You certainly should contact the principal at the school with any
questions or concerns you have, I'm sure there are other kids who have
missed the tests and make-ups before. There may be a process already
in place for that situation.

My personal opinion is that a family wedding would be a lifetime
memory for a child, and I'd take that over some arbitrary standardized
test any day. Enjoy your trip! :-)

Thanks Sue for your answer and it is very re-assuring. It makes sense
if kids in private school do not take the MCAS test then it should not
be a problem anyways.

Gopal, I did talk to the school and the feedback is that it should not
impact the kid as far they know.

Third Grade MCAS is important only to the schools.  Colleges do not look at ANY MCAS much less third Grade.  Grafton does not use MCAS for anything individually unless MCAS scores reveal that your child is a low performer and needs extra help.   Given your concern - I doubt this is the case.  Take her to the wedding!  Enjoy!
