Subject: [spiritof1848] New doctoral fellowship in migrant health
To: Spirit of 1848 <spirit...@yahoogroups.com>

We have a new doctoral fellowship in migrant health at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health & Health Policy, which can be used to study social justice issues faced by migrant populations and approaches to addressing these issues. The fellowship is based in our PhD program in Community Health & Health Policy. Please encourage great candidates to apply before the 3/15 deadline. Many thanks!

Doctoral Fellowship in Migrant Health

The CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy seeks to provide one doctoral student with an opportunity to develop their theoretical knowledge and practical skills in applying policy and public health strategies to addressing issues related to migrant health. The Fellowship will provide a doctoral student the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with Dr. Lyndon Haviland, an internationally recognized public health expert in global health and a passionate advocate for refugees, immigrants, and young people. The Fellowship award includes full in-state tuition and an annual stipend of $35,000 for one new, incoming doctoral student.

The Fellow will work as a research assistant and/or teaching assistant on faculty research projects and courses. To the greatest extent possible, the student will be matched with projects and courses in their own area of interest.

Applicants must also successfully apply through SOPHAS by March 15 for the PhD in Community Health and Health Policy. No additional formal application is required for the Fellowship. Candidates selected for consideration will be asked to submit a personal statement demonstrating their interest in and commitment to deepening their understanding of migrant health and developing skills in public health. The final candidate will interview with Dr. Haviland before being accepted into the program.

Eligible candidates for the fellowship must meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate a history of academic excellence.
  • Interest in the area of migrant health.
  • Willingness to complete the doctoral program full-time (seven credits per semester).
  • Not receiving tuition-based grants or scholarships during the period of doctoral study.

The selected Fellow will:

  • Work 20 hours per week as a teaching assistant and/or research assistant.
  • Meet with Dr. Haviland for mentorship and professional development twice annually.
  • Receive ongoing supervision and guidance from a CUNY SPH Faculty Advisor.
